Canada to keep border restrictions with U.S. for a 'significant' time, Trudeau says

Washington and Ottawa agreed last month to clamp down on non-essential travel while allowing trade to continue across their long shared frontier.

“As we move forward, there will be special thought given to this relationship. But at the same time we know that there is a significant amount of time, still, before we can talk about loosening such restrictions,” Trudeau told a daily briefing.

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters on Wednesday the two countries were “doing well,” and added: “It will be one of the early borders to be released.”

1. US running about 2.5x percapita case load & 3x death load. But where on the curve?

It is hard to say where on the curve the countries are respectively.

Canada seems to be flattening the case load curve, but the death load is stubbornly rising at a regular rate (about 15%) in Canada. Looks linear on a log chart, not yet flattening.

Is Canada just lower down on the same curve or actually being more effective? Perhaps too soon to tell.

2. Maybe has something to do with the larger percentage of rural areas without major hospitals?

The US is just now starting to 'realize' that this isn't just an urban blight, and since we've been busily shutting down rural medical facilities because it's not profitable, the death rate in our more rural areas will probably be staggering.

Rural areas are blessed with more 'natural' social distancing, but also tend to be cursed with a string resistance to central planning and us 'city folk' telling them it's not a good idea to go to church right now.

5. We were behind the US in cases per capita when we put social distancing into place.
