Little Star, our goodbye

On Wednesday, we had a private viewing for immediate family, which lasted for an hour. Ma looked beautiful. There was so little make up. Truly I have never seen anyone look so naturally good. I am not just saying this because I am biased over my mom. But, I cannot tell you how good it made me feel and how much it helped to ease the images in my mind of her while watching her take her last breaths.

Yesterday we laid her rest. We said our last good byes at the funeral parlor. Very sad. Then had a procession to the gravesite.

With COVID, there could be none of the normal comforting. It did upset me my mom could not have the send off she so rightfully deserved.

However, we did the best we could and there are rays of comfort.

On both days there was live-streaming. At the private wake we played the 50’s oldies and all who were important to her we able to see and participate and also say their goodbyes. At the gravesite There was a beautiful canopy and seats where me and my three sisters were able to rest our weary bones. The Reverend, whom I had spoken to of my mother, said a wonderful tribute.

My hope was that many would be able to join the procession from the funeral home to the gravesite. And my hopes were answered. We had a procession of over thirty cars.

When I looked out over and around the cemetery people were social distancing paying their respects and honoring my mother. It was a beautiful sight. A person on this hill another over there and over there......

We did our best for mom in these times.

I thought you might like to know what it might be like when a death occurs during the Covid.

Also, want to thank you all for you wonderful comments on the other thread and special thanks to the admins for adding Little Star to the DU memorial page. It all meant the world to me and my mom as well, of that I am sure.

My mum 'attended' a funeral yesterday, where everyone from her church attended in their cars to give a silent goodbye to a much loved congregant that had died from cancer at 33. The fact that everyone was there to watch the hearse was such a bolster to the family. In Northern Ireland where I come from, funerals are really part of our culture, much more than most places. We have wakes, we have unending visitors, we have open coffins, we have the coffin on the shoulders of out men carrying the coffin from the church to the graveyard, we have people comparing how many people rocked up to this funeral in comparison to the last funeral that was held. All within 2 days. All that has gone. Many are struggling over what the new normal looks like. You did really good for your mother in the new normal, and again, my deepest condolences at your loss.
