Complicit, conniving, power seeking, self-serving Republicans.
They are trying to maintain their relevance. They have pokers in this fire. I don't know where the fear implications come from.
Just look at their demographics and their criminal attempts to suppress voting--which is now being ramped up for the big bang.
When you see that not only are they no longer a viable opposition party to Democrats, they don't have much of a future if they don't make it for themselves. In the next ten to twenty-years, they, (and what they really represent) become a rapidly shrinking minority. As political dinosaurs who really only serve vested, special interests, their skin in the game is a matter of survival and that can only be assured by utilizing Trump's Regime ambitions to force the matter.
We have the proverbial cornered rat that goes for the throat now. Republicans are not acting out of fear of Trump, they are acting out of fear for the survival of the GOP and it looks like they will play as dirty as they have to, (a mobster President and Russian influences/help) to assure they will remain.
That is very dangerous, especially when they and Trump can do a drive by shooting and be said to be incompetent, fearful of the President, crazy, etc. Know your enemy well. Do not give them the excuses that only dull the underlying, willful attempts at subverting our system intentionally and with a malice towards what it is and stands for.
