I've never really understood why the numbers don't add up.

And yes, those are absolutely horrific numbers.

The Active Case number is the Total Cases minus Total Deaths and Total Recovered.

I believe that they may now be adding probable but not confirmed cases to the Total Deaths numbers, since many people are dying before they can be tested, either at home or in nursing homes.

Is what I think this means.

There are a lot of cases, not all are hospitalized.

Or, all the cases include hospitalizations and most are still there, recovered are released, deceased are no longer with us.

Recovered are those with confirmed cases who are no longer testing positive, or have been symtom free for a certain length of time.

When Chris Cuomo no longer tests positive, he will be added to the Recovered number in spite of never having been hospitalized.

Recoveries = this statistic is highly imperfect, because reporting can be missing, incomplete, incorrect, based on different definitions, or dated (or a combination of all of these) for many governments, both at the local and national level, sometimes with differences between states within the same country or counties within the same state.

WHO recommends following the criteria of [symptoms resolve + 2 negative tests within 24 hours] or [symptoms resolve + additional 14 days], but this is only a recommendation. In some countries, when a patient is discharged from the hospital it is counted as "recovered" even if no test is performed.

Some health officials now consider anyone who was diagnosed with COVID-19 three or more weeks ago and has not died to be recovered from the disease. In view of this, "Active Cases" and "Closed Cases Outcome" which both depend on the number of recoveries (in addition to an accurate death count and a satisfactory rate of case detection, both of which are lacking in the vast majority of countries) can be affected by this inherent flaw for many countries and for the total worldwide count.

It seems that the number of people needing hospitalization is a better indicator of what is coming at us in terms of the number of people that will die.

Maybe all of this is Fate's way of getting rid of leaders like Trump and making sure that one won't get elected again for a long time. It took 92 years, approximately, for someone (Trump) as bad as Hoover to be elected President. Hopefully the modern Republican Party dies a fast and painful death before we risk getting another repugh into the office of the Presidency.

that would imply that not just the sickest are being tested in the USA. All indications appear to be that we will have the largest number of dead per capital of any country in the world, by a large margin, when it is all said and done.

22. Asymptomatic people are not getting tested in this country in any statistically significant numbers.

Apr 2020

There have been a few exceptional situations where every member of a large group was tested, such as cruise ship passengers, Navy ship crew, basketball teams, and sometimes close contacts of infected, symptomatic people. It's difficult to get tested even if you have symptoms in most of the country, and in some areas, especially the hardest hit ones, it's difficult to get tested unless you are actually hospitalized.

Much of the CDC data has come from other countries that have employed much more widespread testing, and different testing strategies. The vast majority of the counted, positive cases in this country are not asymptomatic. Our country simply doesn't have the testing resources to to use on hundreds of thousands of asymptomatic people.

Sat Apr 18, 2020, 02:16 PM

that a very large number of Americans don't become ill enough to be designated for a covid19 test at a hospital or sanctioned lab. If you look at numbers, far more people that get tested test negative for the virus, something approaching 2.5 million Americans have been tested, around 800,000 tested positive and of that number, a fraction were ill enough to require hospitalization, the rest of the positive tests were asymptomatic or not sick enough to warrant a hospital bed being used.

Sat Apr 18, 2020, 02:34 PM

It's expected that a significant percentage of people tested will be negative, because there are so many other respiratory illnesses going around and there is a lot of overlap in symptoms. The overwhelming majority of people testing negative in this country are sick with something, even if it's not Covid-19. This country simply doesn't have the resources to test large numbers of people who aren't sick, and it never has. There has been a major shortage of tests from the very beginning in this country.

If you can find any info about large numbers of people with no symptoms getting tested in this country, I'd like to see it. And I'm not talking about the cruise ships, or Navy ship, or sports teams. Those numbers are a drop in the bucket.

I stand by my statement that people in this country are not getting tested, and therefore not testing positive, unless they have symptoms, with a small number of exceptions that are statistically insignificant.

Of the 800,000 plus, over 40,000 have died. You initial claim was that only the sickest are getting tested, that clearly is not correct, far more negative people than infected people have been tested.

Now if you want to say that not enough people have been or will be tested, I completely agree with that point, but that is not the point that you made, your point seemed to have originally been that of the people that have been tested, only the sickest have been tested, as I pointed out, that is demonstrably incorrect.

29. Let me clarify on that. In the worst hit areas with the largest numbers of positives,
Sat Apr 18, 2020, 03:32 PM
Apr 2020

such as the NYC area, there have actually been policies in place to not test anyone for whom the results would not impact treatment, effectively limiting it to mostly people needing hospitalization.

In many other parts of the country that are not as hard hit, there are still severe shortages of testing materials that make it very difficult for most people with symptoms to get tested.

This situation is not universal throughout the country. In my county in Central New York, we are fortunate to have readily available testing. People here who develop symptoms and are worried that it might be coronavirus are able to get tested. Coincidentally, our fatality rate is much lower than that for the state overall. They're still not testing any asymptomatic hypochondriac who shows up.

I think we have likely exhausted the usefulness of this discussion, and I won't be replying anymore. You can get the last word in if you wish.
