When he couldn't get the hostages back he lost by ten points. That's not a reflection on Jimmy Carter. He had choices, almost none of them were good:
That's how ephemeral crisis bumps can be. How will Trump fare when he's already trailing his opponent by mid to high single digits in the midst of a crisis?
Re-election campaigns are referendums on the incumbent. If voters like the job the incumbent is doing they rehire him or her. If they don't, they don't.

Independent John Anderson, an otherwise admirable liberal Republican, whose run siphoned the votes of disaffected liberal Democrats away from Carter.

(35,433 posts)Reagan asked, "Are you better off than you were 4 years ago?" That question devastated Carter. Debates are extremely important when you want to unseat an incumbent.
