Why in the world wouldn't a patchwork of state systems suffice?

(7,411 posts)How can individual incompatible systems run by the states deal with that high degree of mobility we have?
As a side note, CNN had this flight map up next to one for Europe in present lockdown conditions, and there are a LOT more flights in the US.

(14,697 posts)I can't remember where I saw it, but flights are mostly cargo runs these days. The airlines need a certain amount of activity to retain their gate assignments. They can't survive without them.

(7,411 posts)But we are talking about a Three Phase Plan to open things up though right? So at some point those flights will have passengers again right?
Am I the only one who sees the need for a centralized system here?
Perhaps I'm thinking too much like a software engineer...

(14,697 posts)But they aren't gov supported. Google has one, where they are tracking people by cell phones and can tell if one person was near another for 15 minutes or more.
LOTS of privacy concerns there. Once this info is transposed onto PII, all of your anonymity disappears. All of your contacts with friends, acquaintances, your habits, and a whole lot more can replayed for any reason.
Perhaps it's better this doesn't end up in the control of trump inc. You don't believe for a minute that gov't databases are not being shared widely on the right, do you?

(7,411 posts)However I don't feel any more secure with my data in a state database versus a federal database. In fact, it would likely be less secure due to having a bunch of "B Teams" working on it as opposed to an "A Team".

(14,697 posts)Multiple federal databases have been breached over the past several years. I get free credit monitoring because the chinese hacked the database where all security clearance candidate information was housed.
Believe me, there is no "A" team in the fed govt. What there is, is just a patchwork of contractors and agencies all doing there own thing.
And all the controls you could envision won't work if the chief exec orders access to be granted to a third party. I don't think a state governor, outside of desantos or the like, would do that. They would end up in jail. The potus can't. So he does what he wants. Which is decidedly what we don't need.

(7,411 posts)The assertion that a federal system won't work because federal systems never work is a circular argument.

(14,697 posts)Don't put words in my mouth.
What I said was I don't trust this administration to not intentionally give sensitive federal databases to third parties. It doesn't matter how secure those systems are if you intentionally give away secrets.
I trust the states to not do that at the current time.
Heck, the trump team even shared sensitive information with russia before the election in the hopes they could help him. They did as it turns out.
What makes you think they aren't doing it on a much bigger scale?
