The most animated exchange of former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum's Saturday morning event in Manchester, N.H. came when he called out President Obama for his "hubris" and "snobbery" for proclaiming that all U.S. children should get a college education.
"I was so outraged by the president of the United States for standing up and saying every child in America should go to college. Well who are you? Who are you to say that every child in America should go to college? I mean, the hubris of this president to think that he knows what's best.
I have seven kids. Maybe they will all go to college. But if one of my kids wants to go and be an auto-mechanic, good for him. That's a good paying job: using your hands, using your mind. This is the kind of snobbery that we see from those who think they know how to run our lives. Rise up America, defend your own freedoms. And overthrow these folks who think they know how to orchestrate every aspect of your lives."
It was a memorable moment during the 30-minute question and answer session with the Pennsylvania Republican, winning him a nice applause from the crowd. The argument feeds into several narratives, whether it is Obama's alleged elitism or the intrusion of government into different facets of personal life. But Santorum could have chosen a better setting to unveil the new line. The event took place at St. Anselm's college.

President Obama has repeatedly said he wants the United States to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.

Earlier this year, while announcing plans to reform "No Child Left Behind," Obama also said he intends for every student to graduate "career and college ready."

(21,477 posts)He did say that everyone should pursue post-high school education or training, but didn't specify college. He also said that everyone should have the opportunity, and we should as a society see that avenues are available to assure those opportunities.
How radical.

College is not for everyone . Santorum is one of those people on whom it was wasted. After more than 7 years of college, he is still a moron.

(85,813 posts)____ Whether Obama said that is ambiguous. The president has said that America should be "graduating students who are ready for college and a career" which is a bold statement suggesting they should be qualified to attend college but not that they should necessarily go.

(3,690 posts)As Mike Rowe, of dirty jobs has been fighting, apprenticeship, and vocational training, are vital. Leaving only college for all, or poverty, is cruel, and misguided. And leaves many of the more specialized, and difficult professions, unmanned.
For instance, my trade. Moldmaker. Tool and die, has an average worker age set at 63. What that says, is we are unable to supply ourselves with the things we need and want. this is really a national security concern. How?
We cannot even build the bombs we are so proud of, without chinese parts.
My trade takes most twenty years to become well rounded, if ever. That requires forethought.
My teacher, at NTMA, was the man who testified in congress, for the need to fund specialties necessary for our survival as a first world power. they listened. but, only because of the cold war. Now, they just lobby to replace all those lazy bastards with H1B's.
Asinine culture we gots here.

(5,818 posts)Consequences of the GI Bill prove Santorum wrong. In an MSNBC commercial, Lawrence O'Donnell points out that before the post World-War II GI Bill, only six percent of American adults were college graduates. Yhe GI Bill, which paid for veterans' educations, tripled that rate.
By the 1960s, when the vets' careers begain to peak, a tsunami of creative accomplishements had been unleashed. Just consider technology. Why do most airports still use antiquated equipment from the 1960s? Why are B-52 bombers still capable of generating "shock and awe".
The answer: This ingenious equipment worked so well no one could improve upon it for decades.
IMO, investment in education and infrastructure for the future is the best possible use of tax dollars, rather than additional tax breaks for worthless nincompoops like the Walton children and Paris Hilton.

(15,185 posts)he's mentioned that everyone should have the opportunity to study something beyond HS whether it means vocational training or academic four year degree programs. And any skilled labor job nowadays requires some training beyond HS. Companies rarely just train people for jobs coming straight out of school.
Santorum is the embodiment of hubris and nastiness. He's also stupid if he thinks you can just become a mechanic (at least a good one) with just HS diploma. It takes education, typically in the form of a vocational or junior college training. But whatever, don't tell this idiot that. Cars aren't just mechanical. To really be able to work on them now, you need some level of electronics training, which means EDUCATION.
Santorum does prove his own point in a sense. All these degrees were a waste on him. A BA, JD, MBA. It's amazing with all those initials, how little he understands about well...anything.
