(57,073 posts)My wish for this day is that all humans will awaken to how fresh the air is, how clear the skies are becoming & that all will resist returning to "normal" - driving around needlessly, etc. - out of respect for our beautiful planet, and our planetary neighbors.

(12,462 posts)Yes car culture has to die.
Zoning bullshit has made everything too far from everything else.
We can thank Henry Ford for keeping mass transit inadequate.

(57,073 posts)Indeed it was & is by deliberate design, this car culture.
I only wish natural selection were more, well, highly selective & only infect those who are willfully defiant. In a sense, I suppose this is true in broad brush strokes, but I wish it were true on an individual level.
And these assholes in denial are really going to blow this pandemic up by refusing to respect Nature as a force to be reckoned with.

(12,462 posts)They called them garden cities.
Hitler also saw cars as a way to navigate those suburbs.
I hate cars. I can't drive, I rely on transportation of others. I am very thankful for those who help. But I still hate cars. Walking long distances is scary for lack of curbs and sidewalks, traffic lights are scary because you only get a fraction of time to cross the road.
And the cars waiting get impatient as I try to hurry across, which is hard for me. I was hit before as a pedestrian. Messed up my spine.
So I freeze up a little bit and walk slower when in pain when I cross.
And having to walk you pass the murdered animals it breaks my heart. The violence of thier deaths.

(57,073 posts)In this incredibly violent culture, walking anywhere near traffic would be really scary! It is very common in this Memphis region to see a couple of hit & run murders of pedestrians each week. But, of course, anyone vulnerable (aka handicapped, not enclosed in a vehicle, walking to car after grocery shopping , putting gas in car, etc) are more susceptible to not only to vehicular attacks, but being bludgeoned to death (happens frequently in this region!), shot (too many to mention! So common these mass shootings do not even make national news!), or otherwise violently attacked.
Car jackings alone in Memphis are up 90% since isolation began.
Even being in a vehicle is no assurance of safety. Last I saw, there have been some 35-40 random expressway shootings this year already.
I attribute these stats & the fact that self-isolation isn't a whole lot different for me, except wearing a mask to grocery shop, to the fact that the "justice" system continues to release violent human garbage from their cages to again terrorize & violate people.
One concise definition of insanity is "to do the same thing over & over expecting a different result." So we have these disrespectful people running around injuring & killing people who are just going about their daily lives. 🤬
I am glad you have a great support system in place to help you out! .

(57,073 posts)Absolutely! And refusing to respect Nature, I fear, is going to result in a major extinction event globally speaking.
"Get to work," the repukes say. I say "you first!
