Payments would be automatically deposited unless you opted for a check.
How did I screw that up?

(8,445 posts)I get SS, and I also have income from rental properties, so I have to file and pay in every year. AND I got a divorce last year, to further complicate things. I haven't files taxes yet.
I don't think those who are supposed to sort this out have it sorted out.

(11,495 posts)SS was paid, but nothing else.
I heard once, and not sure it is true, that they were using the last number on your social security card for sending out the money. My last number is 7. Like I said this might have just been a rumor. Also my wife is not getting SS yet, but we file together, so not sure how that will work. Her last number on her SS card is also a 7.
I also filed for both years, 2018 and 2019 already, but both years I paid them. In the past, when I did gets money back, it was sent by check, I didn't go through the IRS auto deposit.

(28,347 posts)Wednesday, the 15th - she's paid the 3rd Wednesday of each month. So do I, but I didn't get it.
The difference between us is she filed her taxes. I don't.
My other friend on Social Security didn't receive hers, either. Like me, she doesn't file.
My son, who is working from home, got his about 3 weeks ago. He filed his taxes fairly early.

(16,254 posts)I got my SS payment today, but it was the regular monthly payment.
I hadn't seen any notice that the SS payments were delayed or anything, so thought I'd misread the overview of who would receive payments.

(7,300 posts)That the IRS had to stop processing returns to process the virus checks. I filed a 2019 return (with my bank info in February. I used the IRS website to make sure they had it. I got a message that said my return hadn't been processed yet.
I've resigned myself to waiting for a paper check some day. If by some miracle I get it sooner via direct deposit then yay.

(4,533 posts)Fed officials say you definitely should have it by first week of May.
But never spend money you expect from the IRS until it arrives. And if you owe child support it will go for that instead.

(1,123 posts)The Stimulus Sequence : This will give you an approximate timeline on the process.
House Ways and Means Chair Richard Neal of Massachusetts laid out the expected timeline for Economic Stimulus Payments. The first wave was issued to tax filers who included personal direct deposit information on their return.
A second wave of direct deposits will be attempted at the end of the month. The targeted group in the second wave is the non-filers whose direct deposit information is on record with the US Treasury, primarily Social Security benefits recipients.
The third phase is gradually released. IRS will begin to issue paper checks beginning in May at the rate of five million checks per week to what it assumes are the remaining 110 million taxpayers. The first round of checks will go to the lowest AGI taxpayers. The last issuance will ripple at the end of September. Included in this third segment are the 21 million rapid anticipation refund filers. This doesn't apply to
Tax Shop / D&L Clients because we don't do them.
Not included in the automated stimulus give-away are non-filers who do not receive social security benefits by direct deposits and do not file tax returns. By mid-May, the IRS will post on its website a secure portal that will allow citizens to register, update direct deposit information and check on their stimulus status.
SO, Stay tuned and hopefully by Mid-May, the worst is over. As always, we are here to help.
Thanks for doing business with us.

(4,533 posts)If you filed a tax return in 2018 or 2019 you are in the tax return world, whether you get ss or not. In that world if you listed a bank account and the return has been processed, the money should already be in your bank. If it did not list a bank you will get a physical check. It will be mailed to the tax return address. The physical checks will begin to be mailed real soon, maybe Friday. Starting by first week of May for sure. But the IRS can not physically Mail more than one million checks per day, five days per week. Since there are maybe 100 million people who will get physical checks it will take months to get them all mailed. They will mail them to lowest income first. Look at your adjusted gross income. If it is less than $10,000 your check will be mailed in week one. 10,000 to 20,000 week two. On and on to 198,000 the maximum for an eligible couple.
Those who did not file tax returns but get ss or rr retirement equivalent to ss or ss disability or any kind of ss I dont even know exists then you are in the no tax return world. You will get paid just like you get paid ss pretty damn soon. Maybe Friday, but by early May at the latest.
If you somehow dont fall into either category, say you dont file a tax return but dont get ss, you can file a tax return and get a check. If you are in a coma you can get it on your 2020 tax return next year, when you have awakened or someone files a 2020;tax return for you.mMaybe you can file a 2020 tax return by April 15 2024 and get it but maybe not. You have 3 years after the due date to file a tax return and get a refund. But I am not sure the stimulus is considered a refund for this purpose.

(16,254 posts)I paid taxes each year and they deposit any refund to my account. I checked this morning and didn't have any in yet. I'll check again later.
Actually, I pretty much spent it today. Landscaping and plants I had planned earlier. Hopefully, it won't remind me of Trump every time I look at it.

(4,533 posts)The most recent processed tax return determines bank deposit or physical check. A 2019 tax return means they ignore the 2018 tax return. If you owe child support they pay that. I read that student loan debt can grab the stimulus but I dont know if that is true.
Good luck.
