Postal Service collapse could devastate seniors, small businesses and rural areas

WASHINGTON — If Jack Bainbridge couldn’t get his prescriptions through the mail, the 70-year-old Army veteran would have to make a 90-mile round trip to the VA Medical Center in Kansas City.

Instead, the retired union laborer who lives outside of Odessa, Mo., can walk outside his door, cross the road to his mailbox and be sure that the mail carrier he’s known for years will have already dropped off his blood thinners and other medication.

The U.S. Postal Service, which traces its origins to Benjamin Franklin, remains a lifeline for millions who count on getting medication and other necessities through the mail.

But the independent agency, which depends on postage for its revenue, is facing an unprecedented crisis caused by a combination of forces: a global pandemic that has drastically reduced revenues, a 2006 law that required the USPS to prepay billions for retiree health benefits and a president hostile to bailing it out.

1. I pay all my bills on-line and get all my pensions direct deposit to bank

And I fill my prescriptions at local pharmacies. But rural residents may have to use more expensive Fedex to get prescriptions delivered.

2. Rural America's eyes and ears are the Mail Carrier.

If they see mail build up in the Mail Box,Usually a call to the Local Sheriff's department is made or the Mail Person heads up the drive to make a house call just in case.

3. I live in in-town Atlanta and our carrier knows us all by name. We need that. Esp. us seniors!

4. As often as I get some neighbor's mail in my mail box,

I am sure some of my mail is being delivered in their mail boxes.
Which is the main reason I am scared to have anything important sent to me by mail.
I call the local office and tell them about it, they write down details of whose mail was in my mail box,
but the problem keeps repeating.

My mail is delivered in a community mail box with 50 boxes. I have to walk to the mail station to retrieve my mail.
So I never see the mail person. And I live in a single family home.

6. We have Three Mail Carriers in our

complex of thirteen hundred plus homes. Interesting thing,all three have Bob as their first names and yes,each one is aware of each mail box and if something does not seem right,they call Security and make sure some one makes a welfare check and they follow up before they leave our Community.

Fed EX, UPS, eBay, every online product business and vendor, Amazon, China, stamp collectors, passport seekers, etcetera.
