Nikki Haley endorses letting state governments go bankrupt -- and it immediately blows up in her face

Published 1 min ago on April 23, 2020
By Brad Reed

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Thursday gave a thumbs-up to Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) plan to let state governments go bankrupt — and he was instantly met with furious blowback from many of her Twitter followers.

“States should always plan for a rainy day just like any business,” Haley wrote. “I disagree that states should take Fed money or be bailed out. This will lead to taxpayers paying for mismanagement of poorly run states. States need to tighten up, make some cuts, and manage.”

As Haley’s followers pointed out, there are many problems with her argument.

In the first place, many private businesses are being bailed out with government money right now, regardless of whether they had planned “for a rainy day” or not.

Additionally, Haley’s own state of South Carolina is annually one of the biggest beneficiaries of federal largess, as it receives an average of just over $5,000 in federal aid per resident — the 12th-highest per-capita amount of America’s 50 states.

Small business people aren't the right kind of people to re-funnel tax dollars. They don't make enough to offer Republicans big donations.

MUST come from the feds, the have the presses to print it unlike the states.State budgets almost never run at a surplus that will allow a "rainy day fund' to build. Any surplus would immediately draw calls for tax cuts. Now even Alaska will run deficits due to crude price collapse. There's fiscal ugliness afoot.

Quite a few states, maybe all of them, are prohibited from running a deficit or declaring bankruptcy by their state constitutions. That's why the federal government exists as the backstop of last resort: The feds just print more money to cover expenses, something the states are forbidden from doing by federal law, because the United States is required to trade in just one currency, the dollar.

I mean, if they need federal help they must be just as poorly run as the states that need federal help.

Republican is synonymous with idiot.

If the blue states go bankrupt a la McConnell's wet dreams, there won't be any funds to send to the poor red states.
