Venus is almost as high in the sky as it can be at sunset, and I think just about as bright as it can possibly be.

Okay, I just checked in with My Son the Astronomer, and he tells me that right now it is at -4.5 magnitude. And yes, that is pretty much as bright as it can possibly get.
