Thousands of Californians flocked to open beaches during a heatwave Friday despite Gov. Gavin Newsoms pleas for them to stay home.
The nations most populous state recorded its deadliest day yet in the pandemic, with 115 fatalities in the 24 hours from Wednesday to Thursday. As of Thursday there were more than 40,000 confirmed cases in the state; the death toll stands at 1,597.
But Californians locked down for weeks during the coronavirus pandemic came back to local beaches as the weather warmed, prompting Gov. Newsom on Friday to plead for social distancing during the continued heat wave expected this weekend.
Newsom tweeted Friday: Its going to be nice outside this weekend. You might be feeling cooped up. Ready for life to go back to normal. But cant stress this enough: CA can only keep flattening the curve if we stay home and practice physical distancing. You have the power to literally save lives.
California has been under a mandatory stay-at-home order since March 19.
Pictures taken in Huntington Beach, an Orange County city, on Friday show crowds gathering to enjoy as the state roasted in a spring heat wave. Dozens of locations reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher well before noon, the National Weather Service said, and officials are bracing for even larger crowds this weekend.

(23,479 posts)families request to prevent Covid infection. I can tell you here in Chicago two weeks ago driving on Friday afternoon the streets were quiet and traffic moved. There were cars. But, not so many.
My coworkers and I are noticing a lot more cars in the streets and highways. Our governor and mayor are trying their best. But, I fear the cats out of the bag and it's going to be horrific.

(2,532 posts)Walking, jogging, surfing, etc with property distance and masks are all ok. I saw fewer masks but otherwise it was healthy people remaining healthy. Sheriffs were out and about to make sure.
In Santa Cruz, anyway. Cant talk for the knuckleheads in SoCal.

(40,190 posts)I hope that the people at the beaches stay healthy. As much as I love the ocean, going to a beach would never be worth the risk right now.

(46,023 posts)It gets cool in the evenings in CA. You can cool down your house with fans and then keep the drapes closed during the day. I've managed like that for years.
You don't have to go to the beach.

(3,483 posts)County. I havent made one cent in the last 30 days, quarantined. I havent gotten my $1200. I cannot get unemployment, because Im a sole proprietor (although supposedly I can apply for it on April 28). I have ZERO money coming in.
So right now, I cant afford to run my air conditioner. In summer my electric bill jumps from 30 dollars a month to 250 dollars. And thats with me not even at home most of the day, because Im working and the a/c is off.
I cant even imagine how high it will be with me home and it running 16 hours a day. How would I pay for it?
Do you know how miserable a 110 degree apartment is? Fans just move the air around, they dont cool it off. Its brutal. And I have had heat stroke 5 times, Twice where I totally passed out for hours.
Traditionally, going to the beach in L.A. isnt just for frolicking around, its the ONLY WAY poor folks can escape the brutal heat, so the whole family goes to the beach, where its 20 degrees cooler, for the whole day. Its actually a health decision for them, as it may have to be for me too today!
Im thinking about it. Ive been carefully self quarantined for 30 days, always wearing gloves, mask, and safety glasses when I go out, which has been almost never. Thats my health decision. But what if I pass out in my house today? I almost felt like I was going to yesterday. IS IT THE RIGHT HEALTH DECISION for me to stay home and risk it? Im almost 70 and diabetic. Heat stroke places a HUGE burden on your system , and you feel sick for a couple of days afterwards.
So please dont be judgmental about every person who goes to the beach here. Lots of them are doing it as a survival technique. They simply cant afford, or may not even have the equipment in their dwellings, to make their homes livable til the weather changes.

(2,193 posts)HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Tens of thousands flocked to Orange County beaches that are still open during the coronavirus pandemic as the hot weather settled over the region.
Surfers and crowds of people were seen along the Huntington Beach coast as the region is experiencing a heat wave that is expected to last through the weekend. Officials urged individuals to continue practicing physical distancing when outside, but that didn't seem to be the case Friday afternoon. Many beach goers were seen with less than six feet between them and many weren't wearing face coverings.
While the beach may be open, the parking lots aren't which forced many to look for parking in adjacent neighborhoods. Officials are bracing for the crowds to get bigger over the weekend.
"We're trying to ask people to maybe put themselves in our residents' position and think about the fact that our residents also have limited parking," said Hungtingon Beach Officer Angela Bennett. She added that while it may be challenging, officers will be enforcing parking violations.
