Leading Republicans want to send China the bill for coronavirus pandemic's costs

Leading Republicans are demanding that China be made to pay financially for what they allege was a coverup of the lethal coronavirus outbreak that ultimately brought the U.S. economy to a near halt, erasing more than 26 million American jobs and costing the federal government trillions of dollars in emergency spending.

Key lawmakers want President Trump to cancel the $1 trillion-plus U.S. debt to China and to push companies to relocate their medical product supply chains to the United States. Missouri’s Republican attorney general this week sued Chinese authorities in federal court, seeking to recover billions of dollars in spending on pandemic care and economic relief. Mississippi’s attorney general, also a Republican, said she intends to do the same.

Several of the proposed punitive measures face significant hurdles and, if enacted, would be likely to involve steep costs for the United States, apart from whatever benefits might be gained. But the Republican campaign aims to capitalize on growing public distrust of China and to draw voters’ attention to Beijing’s alleged responsibility for the deepening recession, rather than criticism of the president’s pandemic response. Congress in the past two months has approved nearly $3 trillion in new spending to combat fallout from the virus, a figure that does not include the financial toll for states and cities.

Among the loudest China critics is Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), a close White House ally. In recent television appearances, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee has called for canceling the U.S. debt with China, slapping a “pandemic tariff” on Chinese goods and imposing unspecified sanctions on Chinese officials.

It's almost like you don't have to read the rest of the article. As per:

The Play
- Blame China for the pandemic. Accuse them of evil anti-US motives for sending us Covid-19.
- Rinse and repeat to rile up their base.
- In light of the above, the horrendous economic state of the country now is CHINA'S FAULT!!
- Therefore, China should pay financially for this attack on our country.
- Suggest/announce that the US should cancel its debt to China to recoup some of our Covid-19 losses.
- Realistic Democrats like Biden say that -- constitutionally -- we can't cancel the debt to China.
- Republicans attack in full-throated indignation.
- Fox News, OAN, NewsMax, Hate Radio, right wing media, social media, online ads echo 24/7,
- MSM jumps into the fray with nonstop bothsiderism almost 24/7.
- Meanwhile Trump rallies his base around the narrative that "China must pay and Dems are China lovers who don't want them to pay for attacking our beloved country"
- Financially strapped Americans agree that China should pay for their suffering and transfer their anger from Trump and Republicans to China and "China-loving" Democrats.

It's a classic Republican trap and it could work.

NOTE: The repukes won't need to actually follow through on the threat of defaulting on the debt to China. They just need to threaten loudly and accuse Dems even more loudly.

Exactly! Trump's plan since the beginning was to cast China as a scapegoat, it's a typical republican tactic. Whenever they fuck up, just blame the minority, or the immigrant, or in this case the foreign nation who is about to own our ass.

Now there is a splendid policy, if your intention is to destroy the dollar as a world reserve currency, and ensure the country pays Argentine level interest on even the shortest term borrowing. People like Graham in particular are used to saying all sorts of crap to rouse the rubes, and do not seem to realize the rubes are electing other rubes nowadays, and that the rubes they used to manipulate now are the majority of their party's elected officials, and in the driver's seat in any legislature Republicans hold a majority in. Such cretins think prole-feed like this is sound policy, after all it sure sounds good to ignorant rubes like them....

14th Amendment, Section 4, in pertinent part:

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.

Not seeing the "not valid in case of pandemic" or "unless to the benefit of the Republican party" exceptions.

All the Chinese have to say is we’ll see you in court where the details of each countries response will come out. Really, it’s the american people who should be suing trump and company. If we cant get at him to serve jail time, how about civil wrongful death claims.

say it, but this is something that definitely ought to happen!

If you want to have the bejeezuz scared out of you, check out this video interview with Rosemary Gibson, author of the book, China RX: Exposing the Risks of America's Dependence on China for Medicine - or read the book itself. It's insane. We can't even make penicillin here anymore because Big Pharma has moved all their drug and/or ingredient manufacture to China.

I think it's nuts to be at the mercy of an autocratic and increasingly militarist nation for our necessary medicines. I wish the Dems would get out front on this issue, instead of ceding it to the Repugs.

We have many good reasons to not be so cozied up to China, not least for their innumerable egregious human rights violations.

Furthermore, we should be using China to attack trump, due the money he owes them.

When it comes to China, let's not allow the GOP to frame the issues - let's make sure to get our own framing out in front of the voters, and do it better.

It was not China's fault that the trump administration did this: U.S. slashed CDC staff inside China prior to coronavirus outbreak (please click on link)

Let's make sure the blame stays where it belongs - on the Trump Administration.

But let's get our medicine manufacturing out of China, too.
