First: It is imperative that we all fight for every vote this year. Our lives depend on it more than ever. I dont take that for granted. None of us should.
Theres a big reason why I think things look better for us in 2020 than they did in 2016. Im surprised there hasnt been more written analysis on this reason.
Governorships.
Republican Governors set policy to restrict voting in ways which hurt Democrats. That is an undeniable fact. Democratic Governors set policy to allow more open voting. The difference here can swing things a few percentage points either way.
Heading into the election in 2016, Democrats were governors of 18 states. Republicans were governors of 31 states. There was one Independent governor. During the 2016 election, Republicans won two more state governorships. There were only 16 Dem governors compared to 33 Rep governors after that election.
Where are we now?
Democrats are governors of 24 states versus 26 governors who are Republicans.
Thats a huge swing in momentum and a huge impact on who can vote in 2020.
In 2016, Republicans were Governors in states like Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, etc. Democrats now hold those states. Those differences right there could swing these states.
And in fact, as another potential bellwether of 2020, Democrats are Governors in deep read states like Kentucky and Louisiana. Republicans cant gerrymander and suppress votes nearly as well when they dont have their Governors in place.
If you factor in Joes personal history in Pennsylvania...
Advantage Dems. Advantage Biden.
Anyone disagree?
