Michigan senator apologizes for wearing Confederate flag face mask
Dale Zorn initially defended his actions, saying it was part of our history, but eventually apologized after widespread outrage

A Republican politician in Michigan has apologized after wearing a face mask that appeared to depict the Confederate flag, an image offensive to many Americans as a symbol of racism and slavery.
Michigan state Senator Dale Zorn wore the mask during a Senate vote at the Michigan state capitol in Lansing on Friday. He initially defended his actions, saying his wife had made the mask and that it depicted the flag of Tennessee or Kentucky.
I told my wife it probably will raise some eyebrows, but it was not a Confederate flag, Zorn told Lansing TV station WLNS on Friday.
He went on to add: Even if it was a Confederate flag, you know, we should be talking about teaching our national history in schools and thats part of our national history and its something we cant just throw away because it is part of our history.
When Zorn was asked what the meaning of the Confederate flag is, he replied the Confederacy.

(12,852 posts)The most vaunted unit in the history of the Union forces was the Iron Brigade. They came from several states including Michigan. They stood up at Gettysburg and helped turned the tide the first day. The traitor soldiers known as the Confederacy knew they were in trouble when they saw union soldiers wearing their fabled black hats. The fact this idiot wore that traitorous flag is beyond a disgrace and he should be run out of Michigan.
I'm not even from Michigan, just outraged for them.
Rant complete.

He doesn't know which? So he doesn't know why his wife depicting a flag from one of them?
And then he doesn't want anyone to get a closer look at it. The Kentucky flag does not look like it. And the Tennessee flag does not have the bar or cross as shown above.
It should be considered a disgrace that he would wear it in Michigan. It should disqualify him from serving in elected office.

My paternal ancestors were Confederates, and I won't honor the symbols of the Confederacy.

(11,949 posts)And these midwesterners who have totally shit on the sacrifice of their ancestors leaves me stuck between depressed and furious.
My wifes family homesteaded Indiana in the early 1800s and we have a photo on our wall of her direct ancestor who was wounded at Shiloh and during the Atlanta Campaign along with his obit when he died in the early 1900s calling him a hero of the civil war.
I have the same from my family, but would never celebrate it. It sure they were brave and believed in the cause they fought. But it was the shittiest of causes.
The farm boys from the Midwest saved the nation, eliminated slavery and died wholesale doing so. But killed more than they died! No southern soldiers wanted to face the boys from Wisconsin, Michigan or Iowa. They fought like Wolverines.
