SCOTUS asks for supplemental briefing about whether battle over Trump financial records ...

NEW: #SCOTUS doesn't grant new cases, but asks for supplemental briefing about whether battle over Trump financial records presents "political question" courts should stay out of. Arguments scheduled for May 12

No #SCOTUS cert grants this morning, but there's an interesting order in Trump v. Mazars & Trump v. Deutsche Bank: "supplemental letter briefs addressing whether the political question doctrine or related justiciability principles bear on the Court’s adjudication of these cases."

What does this mean? Perhaps that some justices think the courts should neither enforce nor obstruct the subpoenas. This would be an interesting way for Trump to lose, for I doubt Mazars or DB would deny Congress, though WH might.

..has already said that they will turn over the documents if ordered to do so by the courts. (They were sent the subpoenas, not Trump.) They have no choice since there is no CPA-client privilege rule, with the exception of some situations that don't apply here. (They're the US office of a large global accounting firm headquartered in France.)

Since an Appellate Court already ruled in favor of release, if SCOTUS does not take the case, the taxes must be released.

Its pretty clear--Congressional oversight can demand the tax returns of ANY citizen, including the president, and for any reason. Doesn't matter if its political or not.
