The problem with a WPA/CCC is that we don't really need much stuff built

And the stuff we do need built isn't stuff that random yobs with shovels and pickaxes can build.

One thing we're learning in the lockdown is that a lot of the stuff we've been doing never actually needed to be done.

Don't make up work for unemployed people to do; just give people a check and let them decide to do with their time. They'll probably come up with better answers than a WPA would.

Roads, bridges and public buildings need skilled trades, not randos with a hammer. WhiskeyGrinder Apr 2020 #3

program, do we settle for people without training doing it? And do they get the same wage skilled union tradespeople do? If not, why should we hire union workers? If so, why are we using these programs to undermine unions?

the CCC. They include roads, bridges, lodges and dams. Most are still in use today, almost 90 years later. All were built by men who were out of work.

when the stay at home stuff is lifted people will go back to their previous jobs mostly. in the depression those jobs vanished never to return. the CCC was a program for the old situation.

Demolish abandoned falling down homes in poor urban communities.

Help the communities with materials and labor to set up urban gardens.

Rebuild our falling apart schools and libraries.

Wire up poor urban communities with fast free WiFi

Install solar and wind fricking everywhere in poor communities, making microgrids

For starters

Of course capitalism may have its feefees hurt but the people will come out with skills and be stronger more affluent and healthier

Is IMO now a public utility, the same way as Electric, Gas and Water.

We need nationwide access, and that will provide training and work for many people, those skills will & can move into the 2030s

I live in Columbus, I cannot afford the bundle up of phone, TV, and internet.

Elementary kids trying to do school on line are using their parents phones or sitting outside the library or a school bus that is acting as a mobile hot spot.

This time makes it totally obvious that Broadband Access is a public good.

It is exactly the kind of labor-intensive project that could put thousands to work. Thinning and clearing the understory (not raking) will prevent the devastation that fire brings after decades of fire suppression. Clearing the ladder fuels would prevent fire from reaching tree crowns and burning so hot that soil is sterilized.

The CCC built a wondeful trail system. It needs maintenance.

But it also means we no longer just say "dig a ditch here" to 100 people with shovels (and even then, we tell it to a three-person backhoe crew).

That road is IMO horrible. And I thought US 52 North between Winston-Salem and Mount Airy in NC was bad... but that's a good road in comparison to I-69

And don't get me started on the roads in Mississippi.

We have plenty of roads that need fixing.
