...if he was guaranteed there'd be no prosecutions. I had thought that his ego and narcissism would preclude this...but when narcissists finally do have their faces rubbed in reality, they tend to fall to pieces. He might reach that point in the next few weeks. A few more "disinfectant" fiascoes--and, Trump being Trump, there *will* be more fiascoes--well, who knows what might happen.

Perhaps he can spare himself further humiliation by resigning under the pretense of wishing to return to his former life? He could also feign concern for his family?

Make it at the hands of those wronged by him.

(13,417 posts)He will do so to protect his image rather than rightfully being called a gigantic loser. Given his age and body condition, no one would deny it is possible, even if it is not true. Of course, if he is not on the ticket, Republican turn out will plummet everywhere. So while I would love to kick his ass during in November election, I would gladly welcome his resignation at any point before then.

(3,816 posts)and I do think it is a remote possibility, (and have thought so since he accepted the nomination,) his motivation will be just as much to screw the GOP as to protect his image and spin it to his base. He's never had any love for the GOP. He's using the GOP and "evangelicals" as long as he needs them but he will stab anyone in the back when he thinks it expedient to his cause.

(10,895 posts)I mean, seriously, his doctors are forced to lie about his health being "excellent". He's not going down that road.
If he quits, he'll claim that he did a very, very great job, but fake news spoiled it and the office is now beneath him.

(16,926 posts)That ego is too big and the brain is too small (no matter what HE claims!).
He will fight and lie to the end - and the 2 months after the election and before he HAS to be gone - it ain't gonna' be pretty!

(15,083 posts)for all FEDERAL crimes, but the state of New York would be on his fat ass in a (dare I say, New York) minute. And I don't think they will be convinced to go easy on him.
I would love it if he would resign and go away. But even if he did leave our White House, he would continue to tweet and rile up his posse. The only way we really get rid of him is if those buckets of KFC catch up with him or if he ends up in prison.
His ego won't handle losing well, though. But I also don't think his ego will allow him to consider his losing as even a remote possibility. This is why, WHEN he loses, he will sic Billy Barr and "his" Supreme Court on the election. He will try to nullify the results some how. Don't think it will work, though. This time the Electoral College might just save us.

(38,187 posts)at the very least pitch a tempter tantrum if he loses. I hope he loses. If he doesn't, we need to scrap everything else (other than the Covid-19 response, of course) and work on fixing what is wrong with our vote counting/election procedures.

(48,999 posts)... never tries again. Jail and ignomy should be effective for, maybe, 24 years, a generation, until the effect wears off. Nixon effect lasted until Shrub Bush.
