By Oliver Willis -April 28, 2020 12:12 PM
Republicans have opposed federal help for blue states dealing with the economic fallout of COVID-19.
From the April 27 edition of "The Hugh Hewitt Show":
REP. STEVE SCALISE (R-LA): Well, you know, look, what was missed in that interview that you did with Mitch [McConnell] is Mitch talked about all the money that's already out there.
There's, like you mentioned, trillions of dollars that have been passed, and only a liberal state that had already had their own problems prior to COVID-19 would be talking about more money as Congress is on the verge of voting for another bill that had over $400 billion in aid to our small businesses who are struggling, to hospitals who are struggling.
And we're also talking, the president's talking on down about having hospitals do elective surgeries again, which, by the way, Hugh, that's something that's critical to people's public health.
You know, left out in this discussion about health as it relates to finding a cure for COVID-19 and better ways to deal with social distancing is that there are millions of people that aren't getting colonoscopies and mammograms and other lifesaving procedures that would find something early that could ultimately save their life.

(12,712 posts)I strongly oppose any more welfare to the welfare states. Enough. They have been getting subsidized by the blue states for so long that they take much more than they have given forever.
They don't contribute, they suck it up and then, the gall, they have the audacity to bite the hand that feeds them in this crisis. It is hypocritical and misleading to use the need in the crises to deflect from their welfare status and their Turtle King should be wary of that.
Not only that, but they are also looking to be the worst states in the sense that they are more intent on jumping the gun and reopening early, which will only put more of a strain on resources and funds. It's like states on a meth binge, mentally and fiscally, in that sense.
It would be nice to have that funding issue reigned in. What would the welfare states do on their own without the funding we provide? The Republicans already seem to impoverish and exploit their "constituents" as they deceive them, so maybe there is a threat there and to the coffers of the Senators and Representatives that crack the whip on their people and then spit in their faces.

Snip--"The Rockefeller Institute of Governments analysis of federal government spending and its impact on the states found Louisiana got back $1.52 for every $1 paid to the federal government that year. Overall, about $34.2 billion in taxes flowed to Washington, while the federal government spent $52 billion here -- a net gain of about $17 billion. Researchers factored federally-funded programs, including Social Security, as well as federal employment wages.
