There has to be a better way. People are starving, there will certainly be a shortage...please someone stop the kill and figure out a workable solution.

(12,462 posts)We have the means of production and distribution if we had the guts to take it out of greedy CEO control for profits and shareholders.
We do not have to listen to owners who use what they own to profit as people starve. Co ops are better and more humane than greedy ceos.

(1,660 posts)from a hog producer, willing to sell for .50 per pound live weight (average weight of market hogs 260-300 pounds); purchaser had to transport the live hog(s) to a butcher shop (or process themselves). It's pretty dire.

(25,586 posts)And how much cold storage is currently open and available? I cant imagine its economically feasible to have a lot of unused cold storage capacity waiting around for a just-in-case scenario.

(14,118 posts)refrigerated "hanging beef" which were basically halves of beef shipped to butchers/stores but
there's no reason that many of the units available for shipping purposes could not be used as cold storage too. I'm great at coming up with ideas but I leave it to others to figure out the details of how to do it...

(2,398 posts)You know... somebody who can put several teams of experts together to work on different problems. We need somebody who can make executive decisions. We need somebody who can look at the whole picture, but still focus on the most pressing problems. We need somebody who accepts and learns from the science available to us.
We need a leader. We have trump.

(11,949 posts)But my neighbors might call the cops if I set up a slaughter, scald and butcher station in my backyard!
This is the price we pay for cheap industrialized food. If animals we still raised, slaughtered and butchered locally we would pay more for our meat. But it would be higher quality and we would have more resiliency in our food chain.
