Irish payback Great Hunger kindness reaching out to Native Americans struck by COVID-19.

A large number of Irish people are donating money to Native American tribes affected by COVID-19 as a means of repaying the generosity of Native Americans toward Irish people during the Great Hunger.

At least 41 people in the Navajo Nation in Utah, New Mexico and Arizona have contracted the virus.

Irish people are supporting a GoFundMe providing relief to the Navajo and Hopi families which has raised more than $1.4 million.

But their numbers are very low.

"At the Navajo Nation that crosses three western states, 321 people were infected as of Saturday, an increase of 51 cases in a single day with 13 fatalities, the most in Indian Country. Police started issuing citations to anyone who violates a stay-at-home order."

"This week, the health authority for the Navajo Nation, which includes areas of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, reported 1,197 positive coronavirus cases and 44 deaths. If it were a state, it would rank third in the country for confirmed cases per 100,000 population, behind only New York and New Jersey (though the nation is also testing at a far higher rate than most states)."
