Two men who cops say were homeless died while riding subway trains during a grim 13-hour stretch over the weekend, raising concerns about the spread of COVID-19 just as the MTA aims to close the system overnight to disinfect cars and to move indigent passengers to above-ground shelters.
In the first incident, MTA crews cleaning a C train at the lines northern terminal at 168th St. came across a man slumped over at 7:30 p.m. Friday, police said. The 57-year old man likely died of natural causes.
Its scary going back to work and the first day this happened," said train conductor Joanne Green, who was on her first day back to work after taking sick time because shed been exposed to COVID-19.
There is a lot of homeless people on the trains and I am very scared daily. People have on masks, but most dont. My co-workers and I are very vulnerable to these conditions and would like to see something done. It takes a toll on us as well.

I love my life, but this world seems to be getting harder and harder. I know that's not the case. I know this time in history is one of the easiest to live in. But, man.

(28,442 posts)we have the technology to make it better, faster, stronger, then, I agree. And with this technology comes an acute awareness of exactly what constitutes "easiest." Because we know what a unique, fragile planet we live on.
Humanity as a whole is experiencing existential grief and denial on Biblical proportions. We know climate change is a planetary threat to our species. We know this virus has shut down every nation's economy and is killing people the world over. We're witnessing social injustices in real time as several global human disasters unfold concurrently.
These are not easy times to live in at all. Cut yourself some slack, be grateful for what you have, and use that privilege and compassion to help build a better world.
