MSNBC Andy Lack resigning

NBC News president Andy Lack stepping down amid major restructuring

https://thehill.com/homenews/media/496023-nbc-news-president-andy-lack-stepping-down-amid-major-restructuring

Another version from the Palmer Report

MSNBC Chairman Andy Lack resigns after network faces backlash for phony Biden scandal

https://www.palmerreport.com/analysis/msnbc-chairman-andy-lack-resigns-after-network-faces-backlash-for-phony-biden-scandal/28272/

snip

MSNBC just had its ugliest five day stretch in the network’s quarter-century history. Host Chris Hayes falsely characterized a non-credible allegation against Joe Biden, which led to Biden going on Morning Joe and refuting the whole thing. Even after the Associated Press confirmed that the accuser was fundamentally changing her story, MSBNC still spent the weekend obsessively hammering away at the story as if it were a real scandal. Meanwhile, MSNBC’s audience began loudly rebelling against MSNBC across social media for its journalistic malpractice.

Given the timing, it’s difficult to imagine that Lack’s abrupt departure is mere coincidence. We’re coming off a week in which large chunks of Chris Hayes’ own audience are calling for his resignation, the names of other MSNBC hosts like Ali Velshi have been trending amid backlash, and MSNBC figures like Andrea Mitchell have been getting severely “ratioed” with negative replies on Twitter.

For the simple fact that as information is gained and shared, change happens. It is inevitable. It can be repressed or delayed, but change is constant. Conservatives are very powerful because they are the cultural descendants of the monarchists, but like the monarchists, there are simply not enough of them to stop change and that is reality.

He's done this repeatedly. He was fun to watch during the BushCheney admin, but there is nothing to be done about his own behavior.

Never understood that, myself, but maybe it's because in my life I never had the wonderful savings a high-paying job presumably allows. Every job I ever had, from the cannery in high school to admin asst for an insane screamer when I was 40, when I departed I shook hands with that employer and smiled. His tilts with management and production staff of the various venues in his career have been ongoing for at least two decades, and they seem to get more egregious the higher he rose, especially at MSNBC. He has repeatedly spoken about feeling that he "created" Rachel Maddow and that she has never acknowledged his having had to go to bat and champion her rise at MSNBC. So he obviously carries a grudge. Maddow had already developed a following outside MSNBC well before Olbermann had anything to do with her career. I DO miss his on-air presence, but why ask for a return when he will just blow everything up soon thereafter?

He would let them run wild, it got to the point where I couldn't wait for Rachel to come on. every week - EVERY FUCKING WEEK - during 2016. Even after Hillary got the nomination, she was never offered a paltry single night on Hayes's show in the interest of "equal time".

I couldn't help but suspect that Chris Hayes sincerely believed Bernie would be the nominee, and ultimately win, and would remember Hayes fondly for all that free weekly publicity. I kept having to fight off the feeling that Hayes was trying to cozy up to Bernie so he'd get the job of White House Press Secretary in a Bernie Sanders administration. It just reeked of nonstop audition.

I haven't liked Chris Hayes since then. If his head's on the block, GOOD. He's got a very coveted prime time show, Monday through Friday, and there are other more distinguished and more worthy anchors and reporters who could handle that hour every weeknight. Rachel Maddow could use a better lead-in.

It's a numbers thing.

The numbers.

SOMEBODY in the gearbox is keeping track of the numbers. Even though the House of Reps is still out for another week, the Senate's BEEN out and just got back, or whatever the status of one's governor/state legislature might be, SOMEBODY in the office or keeping track from home IS keeping track of the numbers. The boss may be working from home but doesn't want to, and can't afford to, be disconnected. They need to know what's going on with their people back home. They need to know who needs what, who is in desperate straits, who has an emergency complicated by the COVID-19 emergency. They need to know what to come back to work arguing about, for, or against. They need that info. They need that data. They need to know why we sent them there.

And don't forget -

Democratic Congressperson X or Y needs to know what to argue about with full-on partner reps, DINOs, and CONS.

Whatever caucus that representative is part of needs to know what they're hearing from the voter back home in their districts (when THEY, IN TURN, have to go argue with the Matt Gaetzes and Jim Jordans and Justin Amashes and Dennis McCarthys.

That representative needs to be able to tell Nancy Pelosi what kind of pressure they're getting from back home, for something or against something.

And Nancy Pelosi needs that input to go get in Mitch McConnell's face about how much of a pushback he's going to get, from all over the place (because hopefully she's hearing from her whole caucus on a regular basis).

And all up and down the food chain, and across the map. In every direction imaginable.

They need that data. Don't think there isn't somebody in somebody's office, who's collecting or compiling it. Even if it's nothing but little hash marks beside the name of an issue or a nominee or a bill or a cause or a need or a fill-in-the-blank-here.

So do not remain silent. Do not pull your punches "because now is not the time." There's no time OTHER THAN now.

Once upon a time, there was a farmer. He didn't have a lot of money and, instead of a tractor, he used an old horse to plow his field.

One afternoon, while working in the field, the horse dropped dead.
Everyone in the village said, "Oh, what a horrible thing to happen."
The farmer said simply, "We'll see." He was so at peace and so calm, that everyone in the village got together and, admiring his attitude, gave him a new horse as a gift.

Everyone's reaction now was, "What a lucky man." And the farmer said, "We'll see."

A couple days later, the new horse jumped a fence and ran away. Everyone in the village shook their heads and said, "What a poor fellow!"

The farmer smiled and said, "We'll see."

Eventually, the horse found his way home, and everyone again said, "What a fortunate man."

The farmer said, "We'll see."

Later in the year, the farmer's young boy went out riding on the horse and fell and broke his leg. Everyone in the village said, "What a shame for the poor boy."

The farmer said, "We'll see."

Two days later, the army came into the village to draft new recruits. When they saw that the farmer's son had a broken leg, they decided not to recruit him.

Everyone said, "What a fortunate young man."

The farmer smiled again - and said "We'll see."

How the Left Lost Its Mind

Polemicists, conspiracists, and outright fabulists are feeding an alternative media landscape—where the implausibility of a claim is no bar to its acceptance.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/07/liberal-fever-swamps/530736/

Last month, Democratic Senator Ed Markey delivered what seemed like an explosive bit of news during an interview with CNN: A grand jury had been impaneled in New York, he said, to investigate the Trump campaign’s alleged collusion with Russia.

The only problem: It wasn’t true.

The precise origins of the rumor are difficult to pin down, but it had been ricocheting around social media for days before Markey’s interview. The story had no reliable sourcing, and not a single credible news outlet touched it—but it had been fervently championed by The Palmer Report, a liberal blog known for peddling conspiracy theories, and by anti-Trump Twitter crusaders like Louise Mensch. Soon enough, prominent people with blue checkmarks by their names were amplifying it with “Big if true”-type Tweets. And by May 11, the story had migrated from the bowels of the internet to the mouth of a United States senator.

Some are relative newcomers to this scene. There is The Palmer Report, the publication of record for anti-Trump conspiracy nuts who don’t care about the credibility of the record; Shareblue, a viral news site that aspires, according to its founder David Brock, to become the “Breitbart of the left”; and Patribotics, home to Mensch’s Russia-related rumormongering.

On the “about” page for The Palmer Report, the site thanks a range of well-known people and mainstream media outlets it claims have shared its (dubious) reporting —including Representative Ted Lieu, former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, former DNC chair Howard Dean, the actors Mark Ruffalo and Debra Messing, Newsweek, The Oregonian, and an array of MSNBC contributors. Laurence Tribe, the renowned Harvard scholar of constitutional law, has been an especially active booster for the site, routinely tweeting links to highly questionable, unverified news stories about Trump.

Last April, when Jason Chaffetz announced he would resign his House seat, The Palmer Report published an anonymously sourced bombshell claiming the FBI had discovered the Utah congressman was being blackmailed by the Kremlin. The story was characteristic of the site’s well-worn shtick. But that didn’t stop Ned Price, a former special assistant to President Obama, from credulously passing it along on Twitter. “Interesting, if single-sourced, article from a few days ago,” he wrote. Eric Schultz, a senior adviser to Obama, then chimed in, “Too bad nobody flagged this earlier.” When journalists began pressing the duo on why they were sharing a story from a website with such a spotty track record of accuracy, Price’s response was telling. “Every once in a blue moon, the tin hat can fit.”

Another left-wing node of conspiratorial diffusion can be found at The Palmer Report, a once relatively obscure pro-Hillary blog that has built a large following with its wildly speculative theories about Trump. According to the site, Trump himself had Russian agent Sergei Mikhailov killed in December to prevent the release of the now infamous “pee tape” that purportedly shows the president-elect watching as Russian sex workers urinate on a bed the Obamas slept in. Vladimir Putin, the site maintains, is using the video to blackmail Trump—and the president “may have already acted on it in a manner which would be both treasonous and murderous.” The site’s founder, Bill Palmer, routinely blasts out stories that sound serious but are actually based on a single, unverified source. In May, Palmer reported that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts had ordered Trump appointee Neil Gorsuch to recuse himself from all Trump-related Russia hearings. His source? A single tweet from an anonymous Twitter account under the name “Puesto Loco.”

Long quarantined in the furthest corners of the internet, these left-wing rantings have begun to find their way into mainstream political discourse. In March, Louise Mensch was inexplicably given space on the New York Times op-ed page to trumpet her theories, rattling off a list of Russian operatives she believed should be called to testify before Congress—a list that included Peter Thiel and Mark Zuckerberg. Her tally of agents has since expanded to encompass everyone from Black Lives Matter to Sean Hannity to Bernie Sanders. In April, MSNBC’s Laurence O’Donnell echoed a Palmer Report theory that Syria’s chemical weapon attack had been orchestrated by the Russian government, so that Trump could appear to distance himself from Putin. (Like a true conspiracy theorist, O’Donnell offered no proof for the claim, insisting instead that “you won’t hear ... proof that the scenario I’ve just outlined is impossible.”)

Analysis / Bias

The Palmer Report is typically well sourced and usually points to credible sources. However, there is a very strong liberal bias in reporting and story content. The Palmer Report uses loaded words and sensational headlines that don’t always reflect the content of the article. An example headline is as follows: Donald Trump’s demented “Happy New Year” tweet is the worst thing you’ll read all year. The Palmer Report has been criticized by the Slate for publishing misinformation. Palmer Report also has false and unproven claims according to Snopes, which Mr. Palmer calls the National Enquirer.

From the well respected Atlantic regarding fake news: “It’s more wish-fulfillment stuff. “Trump About to be Arrested!” Well, yeah, when’s that gonna happen? And we know it’s coming from the left because I know it’s coming from known players. Bill Palmer used to run the Daily News Bin, and it was basically a pro-Hillary Clinton “news site.” It was out there to counter misinformation. Which, okay, fair enough. But then he started to reinvent it as a news site, more and more, and he changed the name to the Palmer Report. The stuff that he puts out there, it’s nominally true. When you click on it, it’s some innocuous story [with an outlandish headline]. That is very harmful, I think.”

Here is a list of additional False and Misleading Claims:

https://www.snopes.com/trump-staged-speechwriting-picture/

Notes from Dennis Kelley: The Palmer Report (TPR) is a liberally biased news site / blog that deals more in confirmation bias than in actual reporting. Confirmation bias generally consists of taking a set of facts, often unrelated, and building a web of conjecture around them in order to present a specific point of view as opposed to the actual facts. While confirmation bias may not be, technically, fake news, the sensational nature of this type of reporting often does more harm than good. Mr. Palmer has been criticized for inaccurate reporting in his work by other fact and bias checking sites, both for his work on Daily News Bin and on TPR, as evidenced by the entries on this list from Snopes, as well this article from the The Atlantic. Although TPR does contain some factual content, the misleading and biased way in which it is presented earns TPR a Questionable rating. (D. Kelley 4/3/17)

Overall, we rate the Palmer Report Left Biased based on story selection and editorial positions that routinely favor the left. We also rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to several failed fact checks.

There are angles/narratives that Palmer sees about Trump, Bernie etc that make perfect sense to me.

He covers topics the MSM won't, in a way they won't.

Palmer stood firm that Biden would win the nomination (due to his strong support amongst black voters in the South) while the MSM was crowning Bernie the winner on the basis of a few small primary (mainly white) states.

91. No. Andy Lack has been trying to get rid of Hayes since 2014
Tue May 5, 2020, 06:52 AM
May 2020

When MSNBC's ratings took a nose-dive in 2014, "All In with Chris Hayes" was said to be the first show to the chopping block. When Andy Lack took over the NBC News division in March, he was reportedly intent on freeing up Hayes' 8 pm hour. And when MSNBC finally began shedding shows over the summer as part of an effort to rebrand as a straightforward news channel, Hayes was seen as a certain casualty.

The reports weren't wrong. Lack has been trying to replace Hayes since he arrived in March, and MSNBC President Phil Griffin had been considering a change since well before then, MSNBC sources told CNN. Hayes show, which launched in 2013, was ratings averse from the get-go, and has set record lows for the 8 pm hour -- one of the most coveted and competitive hours in cable news. In the most recent quarter, it averaged just 134,000 viewers in the demo, a distant third behind Fox News and CNN.

https://money.cnn.com/2015/10/06/media/chris-hayes-msnbc-show/index.html

Lack has made some terrible programming choices which cost the network a lot of money(Megyn Kelly) and there are sexual harassment rumors. He was going to step down after this year anyway.

They've also recently elevated Nicolle Wallace and Stephanie Ruhle. I'm no big fan of Ruhle, she's dragging business perspective into every political story. It's as if CNBC is invading. But those 3 plus Lawrence O'Donnell, Brian Williams, and Joy Reid make up the generally unassailable core of the network.
