However, the way things are going in the US, I believe we may actually be approaching a point where a legitimate claim by US citizens for refugee status might be made. It probably would not fly now under present laws (I really don't know) but who knows what might happen in future, especially if a few test cases are raised.

Might be worth a try if for nothing more than a strong political statement. It a pretty easy process (if you wish to follow the "unofficial" route). Simply walk across the border at a non-controlled crossing point (as many in transit from other countries have done)and claim refugee status. You may not be accepted but you are at least guaranteed a refugee hearing as I understand it.
