Donald Trump tweeted on Tuesday that federal aid to states battling the novel coronavirus may depend on those states eliminating sanctuary cities, payroll taxes, and capital-gains taxes.
"Well run States should not be bailing out poorly run States, using CoronaVirus as the excuse!" the president tweeted. "The elimination of Sanctuary Cities, Payroll Taxes, and perhaps Capital Gains Taxes, must be put on the table. Also lawsuit indemnification & business deductions for restaurants & ent."
This isn't the first time Trump has implied he may link government aid to states complying with his hard-line immigration demands.
"I don't think you should have sanctuary cities if they get that kind of aid. If you're going to get aid to the cities and states for the kind of numbers you're talking about, billions of dollars, I don't think you should have sanctuary cities," he said on Wednesday.

I'll put a wager on how NY State functions against how, let's say, Kentucky functions anytime!

(12,712 posts)We are going to ignore the Red welfare states that we all end up supporting because they are poorly run and exploitative of their citizens? We have to make up for the Republican decimation of their populace and then they have the gall to insult us with this kind of nonsense, bite the hand that feeds them and expect the facts to be ignored?
Some change regarding that imbalance has to come from this eventually. The states that put more in than they takeout will have to continue with the idea of a blue coalition and bring this Red discrepancy to the foreground.
Enough! We should not be paying for the mistakes of the gullible who vote against their own interests and then let the results be compensated for by the rest of the union. That's completely ridiculous and an exploitation of the system.
It would be better to say that the actual poorly run states better start to shape up and appreciate the help that they get, not support a President who is going to play quid pro quo with us. There is nothing to negotiate here, really.

(23,003 posts)Don't do it - DON'T DO IT! NO to cutting any taxes whatsoever, no to stopping sanctuary cities, no to killing the post office or close to that, no to eliminating mail in votes, no to stopping early voting, no to every single thing he wants - just no. He's already got 500 billion slush fund to steal the election, don't give fucking millionaires and billionaires another cent as a condition because he will fuck us. You can't make a deal with a person who welshes on everything his entire life, he is total scum and stop pretending otherwise.

They get all huffy because short term capital gains tax is higher than if you hold the investment for a year. Always seeking more marks.

I mean, what the hell will it take for Democrats to demand this man resign? The office of the President does not possess in any way, shape or form the power to give out federal aid only if they change laws. FFS, where are OUR representatives?
