A new Banksy artwork has appeared at Southampton General Hospital.
The largely monochrome painting, which is one square metre, was hung in collaboration with the hospital's managers in a foyer near the emergency department.
It shows a young boy kneeling by a wastepaper basket dressed in dungarees and a T-shirt.
He has discarded his Spiderman and Batman model figures in favour of a new favourite action hero - an NHS nurse.
The nurse's arm is outstretched and pointing forward in the fashion of Superman on a mission.
She is wearing a facemask, a nurse's cape, and an apron with the Red Cross emblem (the only element of colour in the picture).
The artist left a note for hospital workers, which read: "Thanks for all you're doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white."

(3,321 posts)Not hero worship, but understanding what is important, and what is not important.
This message has a deeper meaning than most attribute to it (imo).
Discard the hero worship - embrace the things that affect your life.
It is quite beautiful.

(6,448 posts)That's what got us here in the first place...electing a person famous for being famous and lacking any knowledge or skill.
Nurses are loaded with knowledge and skill. We should have been honoring them since the profession began.
And thank God for the teachers too. Without them, there would be no nurses--or any other professions.
Compassion and education are both super powers. We'll let the X-rays see through things.

(9,580 posts)I must say, though, that you rarely see males modeling nurses. It's kind of a reverse discrimination from many years ago when men were doctors and women were "only" nurses.
There were only 2 genders to choose from. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. God bless nurses, period. Just thought it bears mentioning.
Btw, love Banksy!

Banksy never fails to make me chuckle and shake my head. High praise for an artist of any caliber.

It's a Dr. Who thing.
But apt in this case.
