Republicans praise Trump's pandemic response with Senate majority at risk

Not an ounce of honesty or integrity in any of them, and constituents don't matter.

Republicans praise Trump's pandemic response with Senate majority at risk
Breaking with the president may be more dangerous than sticking by him.

Senate Republicans are settling on their pandemic message as they fight to save their majority: President Donald Trump did a tremendous job.

The coronavirus has killed more than 70,000 Americans, tanked the once-soaring U.S. economy and shows no signs of abating. And Trump’s ineffective leadership is largely to blame, say Democrats who are growing optimistic they can seize the Senate after being relegated to the minority for six years.

But nearly all GOP senators running for reelection have decided there’s little utility in breaking with the president, particularly after seeing some fellow Republicans collapse at the ballot box with such a strategy. And if the economy recovers and the virus dissipates by the fall, Republicans could benefit by sticking with Trump.

It’s the latest sign that Trump has nearly total control over his party. And that Republicans see their own political fortunes tied to the president’s, amid a global pandemic that will dominate both the presidential race and the battle for the Senate over the next six months.

to try to do the bare minimum. Do they think he is so blindingly charismatic their voters will ignore everything that's going on?

And is this why they went into politics? To protect this shambling thug as he throttles their party and the country?

If even a few of the GOP would break with him and stay in the party and be loud about what should be done, that would be-- interesting.

I have a family connection who is a long-time GOP "pol" who managed several congressional campaigns and is now working for a Breitbart-like website. He's very smart, or rather has a high IQ, and when I talk to him (very gingerly), what he indicates is that the "problem" is not the pandemic, but how mean the media and Democrats are to Trump.

That is, instead of talking about the pandemic, he pivots immediately to fake news and haters and Clinton and Obama and how they all are trying to destroy Trump.

I had to say the last time we talked, "That's really what you think the most important problem is now?"

He blustered a bit, but then defiantly said if all those haters stopped criticizing Trump, everything would be okay.

I can't tell if he was being sincere because it's too irrational. But that's it-- the worst problem as they see it is Trump is not worshipped by all.

That's the GOP in a nutshell, I guess.

This pandemic has no party affiliation. Why aren't they more concerned with people getting sick and dying than their image as tough against anyone who doesn't have the 'vision' dolt45 has. Their inaction will ultimately be blamed; how is that good for anyone's campaign?

Look at Cuomo. (I don't mean he's only done a bit of effort.) He has been honest and forthright about the difficulties, and acknowledged that no one can make this go away, but he'll do his best to make it better than it is now.

And people understand. They know he can't fix this, but they approve that he's trying and succeeding to a degree.

But Trump is so wedded to the idea that he can't take responsibility because that might mean he 1) has to do some work, and 2) might get blamed, that he's actively working to make things worse.

I don't know what will happen if he's 're-elected' by the only means available to him (widespread cheating, definitely possible given his stranglehold on the GOP and his collusion with Putin). I don't know that our democracy can survive.
