"Trump’s 4-step plan for reopening the economy will be lethal"

Step 1: Remove income support, so people have no choice but to return to work. Trump’s Labor Department has decided that furloughed employees “must accept” an employer’s offer to return to work or forfeit unemployment benefits......Iowa Republican governor Kim Reynolds says “That’s a voluntary quit,” making someone ineligible for benefits."

Step 2: Hide the facts. No one knows how many Americans are infected because the Trump administration continues to drag its heels on testing. To date only 6.5 million tests have been completed in a population of over 200 million adults. (Yesterday Trump said: “In a way, by doing all this testing we make ourselves look bad.”)

Step 3: Pretend it’s about “freedom.” Trump called on citizens to “LIBERATE” states like Michigan, whose Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, imposed strict stay-at-home rules."

"Meanwhile, William Barr has directed the DOJ to take legal action against any state or local authorities imposing lockdown measures that “could be violating the constitutional rights and civil liberties of individual citizens.”

Step 4: Shield businesses against lawsuits for spreading the infection. Trump is pushing to give businesses that reopen a “liability shield” against legal action by workers or customers who get infected by the virus.

That right there is some seriously sick and twisted shit.... the ultimate act of homicidal narcissism by a man who's obsessed with getting reelected at any cost..... to us.

This is going to be a long time of remote learning.

Phase 1 Schools stay closed

Phase 2 Remain open with enhanced distance learning. ONLY FOR CHILDREN WHO LIVE IN THE LOCAL AREA

Phase 3 Restrict attendance to those from other Phase 3 areas

I can't imagine any college in the country outside the deep south even thinking about opening in the fall given these guidelines.

I also doubt that the insurance companies will allow any college anywhere to open in September with these guidelines. The college would likely have to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the liability insurance coverage company that they assume full responsibility for any lawsuits related to Covid-19. The insurance companies will be super conservative on this and put all the risk on colleges that open.

With Liberty already being sued by people who would be among those most likely to drink the koolaid, I can't imagine any board of trustees putting their own wallets as well as the colleges on the line to open in September.

Bummed that I have to talk to my college son about this. His first year of college disrupted and now fall quarter likely as well. Hard to learn to be an engineer if you can't take any lab classes. Lucky for him, his old man can help with advanced math and science classes.

But it is likely to look very different.

We're talking about using classrooms designed for 180 to seat classes of 60 (if we are allowed a "gathering" that large. Holding classes in shifts - possibly early in the morning, late at night, and on weekends in order to have enough classrooms to socially distance with smaller classes (and still serve everyone). We're also likely (if we can get it past our accreditors who require in-person classes) to shift to more blended classes that require fewer hours in classes.
