NYT: Travel From New York City Seeded Wave of U.S. Outbreaks

New York City’s coronavirus outbreak grew so large by early March that the city became the primary source of new infections in the United States, new research reveals, as thousands of infected people traveled from the city and seeded outbreaks around the country.

The research indicates that a wave of infections swept from New York City through much of the country before the city began setting social distancing limits to stop the growth. That helped to fuel outbreaks in Louisiana, Texas, Arizona and as far away as the West Coast.

The findings are drawn from geneticists’ tracking signature mutations of the virus, travel histories of infected people and models of the outbreak by infectious disease experts.

“We now have enough data to feel pretty confident that New York was the primary gateway for the rest of the country,” said Nathan Grubaugh, an epidemiologist at the Yale School of Public Health.

More reasonable people would say two weeks.

Did the NYC outbreak come from the New Rochelle outbreak?

...what an early vector it was. But I guess people who work in tech stay, once there, stay there, and don't travel much to the rest of the country.

Subways and bridges should have been closed. Many people who left NYC to go back home to their home states brought the virus with them to infect their their friends, loved ones, and communities.

His fiancé is a patient care tech at a rehab facility. They just had 4 clients test positive. No symptoms. She has been wearing PPE but we’re all scared. This is going to happen EVERYWHERE. Of course the idiots who think “this is a plot to wreck the economy so Trump loses the election” are going to get it too. They’re in Palm Beach County Florida. Said that except for people wearing masks at the grocery store, not much has changed.

I’m here in Silicon Valley. Things are getting back including workers going back to the office, and large scale construction projects resumed. Many layoffs in tech startups. My sister who is ER nurse in San Jose is worried about layoffs as all visit types for her health care org (Sutter) have never seen such low numbers. 50/50 on masks and gloves in public.
