Senate Republicans are quietly beginning to contemplate the possibility of an election-year confirmation battle for the Supreme Court.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgs hospitalization this week and the looming end of the Supreme Courts term raise the prospect of yet another prized vacancy for President Donald Trump. And if there is a surprise opening or retirement in the months before the presidential election, GOP senators plan to act on it, despite denying President Barack Obama a Supreme Court seat in an election year.
Republicans say they wish Ginsburg a swift recovery and have no inside knowledge of a retirement but are prepared to move if a vacancy presents itself.
Were going to fill it if there is one, said Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the No. 3 GOP leader. With Justice Scalia ... people might not have thought he was the one, because he wasnt the oldest at the time. You just never know.

(15,777 posts)So ghoulish. I know they didnt let president Obama pick replacement because they had a republican senate. But paybacks will happen when a republican president has a democratic senate.

(5,555 posts)They know what is coming in Nov and will cement this in if they can.
We'd have to keep Manchin in line too, which will be an increasing concern once we take the Whitehouse

(26,729 posts)Nothing changes. If theres an opening in December... the lame duck Senate will fill it even if Trump is a lame duck.
