It came in a phone call from my oldest son. Said son is married to a Chump supporter and has adopted her stance over the years, to the point where politics is a taboo subject among us. The comments I've heard from him have made me wonder how I raised a person with such warped thinking. It's been heartbreaking at times.
Fast forward to today's call. "Mom, have you heard the idiotic spew coming from trump about COVID? Can you believe someone could be this stupid? What the hell is wrong with this jackass?"
Welcome home, Son...best Mother's Day ever!

My daughter just started dated a guy who is "Republican, but I don't care for trump." I worry that that is still a slippery slope, but at least he doesn't like trump!

Good luck!

Perhaps COVID will be The Great Equalizer, leaving harmony and balance in the wake of its destruction. When something threatens your family so personally and directly, apparently it can clarify one's thinking pretty quickly. If Chump's stupidly about the 'rona is what finally reorients the thinking of the MAGAts, it will save us from another miserable four years.

(33,512 posts)I loved him dearly, and he loved me, but it is true that we often ended up screaming at one another about politics. He was pretty right wing.
Our wives, my wife, and my stepmother, couldn't believe how we argued, and then how we always managed to make up.
I did have a few run ins with my oldest son over Bernie Sanders, who I despised, and of whom he thought somewhat more highly. (His preferred candidate was Andrew Yang.)

(10,885 posts)personal friend of Prescott Bush (GHWB's father). He was quiet about it, though, as he was about most things. Unfortunately, he was also what today we call a racist. He was raised at a time when it was simply thought of as "being better".
Even as a kid, I was embarrassed by some of the things he uttered, somehow innately knowing that he was wrong in his thinking. High school brought about my strengthening opinions as I had several black friends during those years. It was difficult to understand why my otherwise wonderful dad harbored these horrid opinions.
We rarely discussed serious issues because we could sense the damage that might do to our relationship. He never changed, but I grew more liberal as time went on. Mom wasn't a factor - she wasn't a thinker, and voted as Dad told her to do.
I adored my dad and never wanted to upset him. He'd be appalled that his only child moved so far to the left.
I often wondered if he would have mellowed over the years and would have accepted Obama as POTUS. Rather, I think he'd be a trumpster were he alive today.

My dad got involved with that Swift Voter Veterans group. My dad was career military and an AF pilot. He was a Democrat, but after he went to Vietnam when I was 10, he came back a Republican and voted for Nixon. Then he got all bitter about Watergate etc.
He didn't mail in his ballot in Nov 2016. He said he wasn't gonna vote cuz of the "grab em by the p..." He died before the election, my brother found the blank ballot. (My brother is a Republican too)

(28,817 posts)My brother once brought home a group of friends. One was a very chubby young black woman. The fattism was almost as toxic as the racism.
They made her leave.... So everyone left including my brother. It was one of the defining moments. I was a fat child. They berated me pretty much always. I really felt they hated me, too.

"Plenty - my life, my family, my livelihood." If COVID had to strike, it picked a good time to do so. 179 days to the election...YAY!

(10,885 posts)With politics being a taboo subject when we're together, at least the rest of us don't have to listen to it. I'm not sure how she came to support him - her parents are as anti-Chump as any good DUer. She's somewhat infected their two teens, though, so there's still work to be done.
Happy Mother's Day to you also! 💐

(25,258 posts)Or seeing that there is insanity in the WH
My hubby voted for Trump, but didn't like him. (It's the SC abortion thing) After a few months, he was like, "What was I thinking??" He usually votes for mostly Democratic candidates, but he feels out of religious conviction that somehow Roe V Wade will be overturned. Now he realizes that Trump is nothing but the lowest common denominator and scum of the earth.
I think he's given up on the Supreme Court for awhile...

(10,885 posts)There is not a single value or conviction in which he truly believes. The only principle he follows is "What will benefit him the most at the time."
IMO, the only thing I think he has any caring for is I'wanna, and then sometimes I even doubt that.

(10,885 posts)Seeing the path my son was on, I fully expected he would continue to swerve to the right. His wife is a powerful force, and it's usually easier to "Go along to get along". My son is no wimp, but he does like to live a pleasant, low stress life.
I'm beginning to see cracks in Chump's stronghold. With Chump going off the rails on a regular basis, it seems those who are on the fence are now beginning to lean in our direction. Perhaps your child(ren) will be among them.
Happy Mother's Day!
