Trump: California too slow to reopen, suggests it's intended to hurt his election chances
SACRAMENTO — President Trump suggested Friday that states that are not moving quickly to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic, including California, may be doing it to harm his re-election chances.
In an interview on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends,” Trump singled out California for being too slow to restart its economy.
“You look at some cases, some people think they’re doing it for politics,” Trump said. “They think they’re doing it because it will hurt me the longer it takes, it will hurt me in the election, the longer it takes to open up. And I can see some of that. Because some of these people are being unrealistic. They’re being ridiculous. I’ve looked at a couple of states that are being absolutely ridiculous.”
The president specifically cited only California as a state that he felt was reopening too slowly, though he gave a shout-out at the same time to Gov. Gavin Newsom. The two clashed on numerous issues before the pandemic, but they have been mutually complimentary during the coronavirus crisis.
“Gavin Newsom’s been very generous to me in his statements, and I appreciate it,” Trump said. “But I think they can move a little quicker in California, to be honest. And I think the people are forcing it. The people are going to force it.”
