A bit of respect and admiration for Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney is the only Republican senator to turn his back on the insanity of Trumpism. He has, to some degree, the luxury of representing a state in which Mormons will probably reelect him regardless of his turning against the orange beast.

Romney is now an outcast in the Republican controlled senate. But my guess is that some of his "fellow Republicans" secretly envy him and wish they could join him in his rebellion.

Even so, Romney could easily have kept his mouth shut and be accepted in the madhouse of Republicanism. Yet he chose to walk away from a total, immoral, ignorant, evil madman.

When Romney ran against Obama, I don't recall him approving any of the usual Republican sewerage thrown at Obama. What I'm saying here is that I believe that Romney is basically, a decent human being. Too bad he's in the wrong party.

The bottom line here is that we should recognize a Republican who fully understands that Trump is unfit for, not only the presidency, but to live in a sane society. Whatever the reasons behind it, he has stood up and declared himself free of Republican criminality and insanity.

(As I write this, the Dr. Bright hearing is going on in the senate and Republicans are proving they are buffoons who are trying to sufficiently apply their lips to Trump's ass.)

When he was running against Obama and they were bringing up that birtherism bullshit, he made a campaign appearance touting how he was born right here in the USA.

He just took a tepid stance during the impeachment - voting for one of two articles and hemming and hawing before doing so - to carve out a niche as a "principled" Republican when the ship goes down.

Romney ate as little a bowl as possible.

Give him a small break. He really doesn't want to see America turned into a dictatorship.

Name one other Republican who is doing what little he can to stop the insanity.

this will always color my opinion of Mitt:

I don't care how comfortable the crate was. They travelled long distance with the dog crate strapped to the top of a car. Not okay.

Nonetheless, do you think any Republican would give a shit if he traveled a long distance with a child in a cage strapped to the top of the car.

How much bitching do you hear from Republicans about those children kidnapped at the border and put in cages. Not to mention that we are hearing nothing about covid-19 in regard to those cages. My guess is that we are talking about crimes against humanity.

But that’s a damned low bar you’re setting.

I’m not going to go through, note for note, every damnable thing Mitt has done in service to his republican ideals. His milquetoast attempts at putting any brakes on shouldn’t be misconstrued to exonerate him for any of it.

And don’t be so quick to free him of republican criminality. Any of them.

a good German soldier, but he would never have tolerated serving in a concentration camp.

There really is a distinction here. And that distinction is between those who will go along with the current regime to a degree, and those who will willingly commit genocide. Do you honestly believe that Romney would have been a part of that?

And speaking of genocide, who knows how many Vietnamese we murdered. That was an unnecessary, bullshit war that we were lied into. Many were drafted and told they were "serving their country." Sorry, but the price was too high and the "cause" was meaningless.

Romney may be in the wrong political party right now, but he recognizes right from wrong.
