Usage of food stamps is surging across the U.S. as unemployment soars to its highest level since the Great Depression. But enrolling for food aid may soon get tougher, with the Trump administration pushing to implement a policy that would curb access to the federal program.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture this week said it is appealing a court ruling that blocked the Trump administration from imposing additional work requirements to qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program on poor adults without children, according to court documents. The Trump administration has sought to cut the food stamp program, with USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue arguing last year that the program was meant to provide "assistance through difficult times, not a way of life."
The latest effort to curtail the program centers on new regulations that were set to take effect on April 1. But in March, a judge blocked the rule, calling it "likely unlawful" and noting that food benefits are critical given that "a global pandemic poses widespread health risks."
That decision allowed 700,000 adults to keep their food stamp benefits a number expected to grow amid the economic devastation caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

If Trump can't kill grandma with the coronavirus he'll starve her.

(12,712 posts)Princess Electra is back on the food box idea and I smell a connection. They dusted an old and unwieldy idea off and she is presenting it, (for sweet, sweet, Daddy) as a great new idea, which it isn't really and that has been pointed out in critiques of the last round.
We do need more food for the growing numbers of hungry, but what is the problem with them getting it themselves with SNAP? Well, that article shows why.
Loosen the restrictions on SNAP, increase the allotment so that it is realistic and livable. It is that simple. No problem. Food stores benefit, too.
What Trump is doing is the opposite, of course. Perdue is another Trump enabler appointee and destroyer of what is helpful and good, to me. They should stuff him, roast him and then feed him to something and that would make him more useful.
You know, gosh forbid that people should eat free food unless its some pre-picked stuff in a box that ignores your individual needs. Choice? You want the luxury of choice? No. Meanwhile, let's blow $176,000 on some golf cart rentals. Sounds expensive for golf carts, but that's alright.

(5,062 posts)I just got home from taking someone shopping. She had been hurt at work last year and required shoulder surgery and a long rehab. She got food stamps during that time. She very recently went back to work and a couple weeks later COVID caused her to be laid off. She applied for food stamps and was told she no longer was eligible. She applied for unemployment and was told she had not worked long enough to receive it. So now she has no income and no food. I bought her a week's worth of groceries out of my SS. The whole country is going to the dogs.
