GOP senator slammed for mocking psychologists: 'We are in a mental health crisis'

By Dan Desai Martin -May 18, 2020 6:40 PM

'If there was ever a time in our country when we need more mental health professionals, this is it,' the American Counseling Association said.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) used a Saturday graduation speech to demean graduating seniors, mock mental health professionals, and spew racist tropes about the coronavirus pandemic. His words are now bringing him widespread criticism.

In his speech, Sasse said psychologists are just employed "just to help people forget high school" or "research hamsters who get lost in mazes." He added, "if you are headed to college, do not — do not — major in psychology."

Sasse also belittled graduating seniors, congratulating them on "not on graduating high school, but on making the journey down the stairs from your bedroom to the living room and putting on something slightly more formal than sweatpants."

He concluded by reiterating racist tropes about China and the coronavirus pandemic, promising "a serious reckoning with the thugs in China who let this mess spiral out of control by lying about it."

He should stop by 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue some day.

Big ugly orange guy in an ill fitting suit. That's your "thug".

I have been helped by psychologists several times in my life. It appears he could use some help too.

Think about those young people - some of whom might have aspirations in that field - who felt diminished by his words.

It is amazing how proud they are of their ignorance. This is why we so desperately need to improve our educational system and make it a priority. There are too many idiots out there who eat this BS up with a spoon and are so willing to follow them right off the cliff. The inability to think critically is a serious problem in this country along with the proliferation of right wing media outlets.

This November is more important than most people realize. What happens on November 3rd will determine whether we survive as a thriving democracy or turn into a third-world dystopia. Right now, it feels like we are hanging on by a thread.

I decided to erase it. He's not worthy of it. The only thing I want to say is Fuck off. Signed someone that works in mental health.

...and, if you need any proof, look at who's in the White House.

While we're at it, let's talk about the last bit of his comment. I attended St. John's College, a "Great Books" school where you don't have majors, but carry on a unified course of study in the humanities, heavy on philosophy. Needless to say, it's not a school you attend to graduate with a specific set of vocational skills; rather, pretty much everyone there plans to get a broad liberal-arts education in their undergraduate years, and go on to specialize in an area of their choice in graduate school. Well, Sasse attended there in the "Graduate Institute" - a Master's program. And if there's anything that should peak out the irony meter, it's being told "if you are headed to college, do not — do not — major in psychology" by someone who chose to get his Master's degree in the flippin' Great Books!!!
