Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks with President Trump and with members of the coronavirus task force on April 8.
In the growing series of President Trumps controversial removals of inspectors general, the firing of State Department IG Steve Linick might be the most problematic. Linick, weve come to find out, had been investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo personally, as well as a major decision Pompeo had approved on an arms deal with Saudi Arabia. And both the White House and Pompeo have said the removal of Linick was Pompeos call.
On Monday, Pompeos office made the case for why Linick deserved to be removed. But, at least at this point, its pretty thin gruel.
As The Washington Posts John Hudson and Carol Morello reported, Pompeo and his office are spotlighting two key issues with Linick: that he didnt mesh with the State Departments goals, and that there were leaks involving his investigations.
Heres the crux of the case they made for Linicks removal:
Pompeo told The Washington Post that he advised Trump to fire Linick because he was not performing a function that was additive for the State Department.

nobody .. including his party and his base .. has any delusions about ethics or rule of law anymore. They all know what he is, and they're all along for the ride.

(5,936 posts)2. Didn't Pompeo previously state that he had no idea he was being investigated?
And now he says Linick was fired because of leaks involving his investigations?

(82,849 posts)4. A function that was additive for the State Department? Whaaaa?
Does Pompeo know what the Inspector General's job is? Certainly crooks and murderers don't feel like the cops are performing a function that is an additive to their schemes. Sadly, criminals don't have the power to disband the police force.
