Walgreens price gouging

Last edited Tue May 19, 2020, 04:36 PM - Edit history (1)

I noticed they charge $3.99 for an 8 ounce spray bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide (walgreens brand)

At Whole Foods of all places a 32 ounce bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide is under $2
Whole Foods also had distillery made hand sanitizer at reasonable prices.

Just another sign of how things are coo coo bananas.

1. Walgreen prices are extremely high across the board

Apparently this strategy works for them, they clearly don't care about value shoppers at all.

They won't price match of course, because they don't care.

All the OTC and HABA stuff I use, I buy at target or online, but sometimes I have to use them or CVS. A three pack of tums at walgreens in the phx area costs about $4.50, it's $1.29 at target. That's a huge difference in margin.

It's like that with everything there.

2. I always have to wait for sales to buy reasonably at Walgreens and use their point system too

Target for years has had the large Peroxide bottle for $.99 where I bought some in March but they were low.

Spouse has one prescription at Walgreens and we get points from that so I go there every 3 months and usually pick up a couple of sale items on necessities and sometimes they have a good sale on laundry detergent or coffee.

3. I think you mean price shoppers.

Value shoppers weigh price along with all other factors that matter to them, like location, parking, hours, crowding, cleanliness, etc., and may decide to buy at the higher price store.

The last time I bought a bottle of that stuff it was around $2, maybe $2.50.

They are gouging on essential pandemic items, at a time when many people have less money than they ordinarily do.

because it is a tourist area. But CVS isn’t much better. I try to get most of my drugstore items in the grocery stores or dollar type of stores. And both Walgreens and CVS are terrible with their sales because they give you all of these coupons but the fine print says that if anything is on sale the coupon does not apply. But if you look at their shelves they’ve got 2 million stickers under every item because most of their items are marked buy one get one 50% off or something like that, and that makes it count as a sale, so the coupon is worthless. They just try to razzle dazzle you with a lot of “on sale” bullshit.

I think the spray kind is always more expensive.

I bought the bottle stuff sometime late March and price was usual price.

wow . . . that's crazy. At Wal*Marts in Georgia, you can get a pint for .88 sometimes and sometimes a quart for a $1 if you shop well.

Walgreen's 'prompt care' clinic is a rip-off too, with prices WAY higher than competitors, which sucks if you're having a minor emergency and think you're just going to the closest place for a quick prescription. Avoid their clinic if at all possible.
