WASHINGTON Joe Bidens campaign is asking some potential vice presidential candidates to submit references as the presumptive Democratic nominees team begins the formal vetting process, according to two people with knowledge of the process.
At least one of the candidates who has been asked for references is New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, according to an individual with knowledge of the request.
A spokesman for Lujan Grisham said late Tuesday that the Biden campaign had reached out to her, though not necessarily as a potential vice presidential candidate. Lujan Grisham is vice chairwoman of the Democratic Governors Association, a position that gives her a national profile and puts her on track to lead the group in 2021.
The campaign has reached out presumably because (Lujan Grisham) is not only DGA vice chair, but also the only Latina governor thats important input if were going to win in November, Lujan Grisham spokesman Tripp Stelnicki told the Journal.

(8,910 posts)with only 5 electorial votes and a state already in the Blue, I think it would be better to find a possible VP candidate somewhere in Texas to possibly flip that state or in a swing states like Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin or maybe even Arizona.

(8,910 posts)Unfortunately, a lot of latinos wont vote because of fear of arrest or deportation.
When I was part of the GOTV in NM in 2004, on election day, when I knocked on doors, I was threatened by multiple people, who told me that they were afraid of me bringing police attention to them.
I was stunned, all I was handing out was a card with a list of their voting rights.
They told me that police wait at the polls with a list of people, in that precinct, who have some form of violation like failing to pay a parking ticket.
Very intimidating to them.

(945 posts)...and all the crap Trump has said about Hispanics, I'm not sure picking a Hispanic/Latina running mate is going to sway the vote. That being said, she seems to be a fine politician. Maybe she's be chosen for something other than ethnicity.
Again, I know this is politics, and it's a game of inches.

(89,244 posts)They would not be in consideration if they were not fit to be President.
It's the same as Obama picking Biden because he was a white man that appealed to a certain type that is reluctant to vote for women or minorities. It doesn't mean he picked Biden just based on race .

(226 posts)I lived there 30 years, and NM needs an intelligent person as Governor. Too often, the politicians that get elected there are stupid, crooked, or both. She's neither.

(81,852 posts)But, Lujan Grisham is the only female minority governor with experience. There are some people that want to check off demographic boxes and she does that.

(945 posts)...Biden painted himself into a corner when he pledged to choose a female running mate. Up to that point, I was certain that Eric Holder would have been his best choice.
At this point, though, I think Biden is going to HAVE to go with a Black woman. It's the most loyal DEM base, and that base is expecting it. Also, Black women, alone, can tilt WI, PA, MI, and FL. I'm not sure the Hispanic vote would respond accordingly.

(3,818 posts)I like Val Demings more and more everyday. Social Worker, Police Chief of Orlando (credited with reducing violent crime), MA in Public Administration, sitting Congresswoman. 'Taint scared to speak up at all.
I love Stacy Abrams but she has zero gov't experience and VP is not a place to start. Seeing what has happened, currently, VP & Pres are not an on-the-job training position. Governor is pushing it, too. Congress would be a good place. Just enough time to see how it goes, meet your colleagues, know how to write a bill. Experience counts for everything. Take the opportunity. THEN run for Pres/VP. Though a Congressperson has, up til now, not won the Presidency. The only reason I can think of is that the Congress is current events, the Senate is past is prologue and time for reflection. It seems to by why a lot of presidents have come from the Senate. PBO being the latest.
Race, color, gender should not be the sole arbiter of whom to vote for. Look at ND & Iowa governors - they are women, how are the doing?

(12,375 posts)Im beginning to agree that in the past there was not this Miss America pageant style vetting when all the candidates were men. Make your decision discretely in private... you have many qualified and brilliant people already in line.
