New York Times: If the United States had begun imposing social-distancing measures one week earlier in March, about 36,000 fewer people would have died in the pandemic, according to new estimates from Columbia University disease modelers.
And if the country had begun locking down cities and limiting social contact on March 1, two weeks earlier than when most people started staying home, a vast majority of the nations deaths about 83 percent would have been avoided, the researchers estimated.

(11,996 posts)1. Cuomo was saying this a bit ago, wish he had done more sooner, but
Didnt think there was enough reason to justify it, like people wouldnt put up with it yet.

increase in road traffic these days, confirms that concern.

(33,328 posts)4. Could've been 1500 or less, with test, trace, quarantine.
A competent president, for example Obama, would've jumped on this by the time Wuhan was on lock-down.
Denial of the need for immediate action -- testing -- means that we still don't know where it will flare up next, so we don't know where it might be safe to crank up anything resembling normal activity.
The incompetent, ignorant, Republican assholes have compounded the cost in lives and economic misery.
