NY-14: Ocasio-Cortez primary opponent Caruso-Cabrera goes on fierce attack in debate: 'AOC is always

Former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, who is running a primary challenge to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, slammed the New York Democrat's response to the coronavirus on Monday, saying, "AOC is always MIA."

Caruso-Cabrera has relentlessly targeted Ocasio-Cortez since she launched her campaign in February. Last month, she called the freshman lawmaker "out of touch" for voting against a $484 billion coronavirus stimulus package.

"My opponent AOC made very clear all of her priorities, and yet, what I don't understand is why AOC is always MIA," Caruso-Cabrera said during an online debate hosted by BronxNet.

Caruso-Cabrera said that Ocasio-Cortez remained in her Washington, D.C., apartment building with a Whole Foods in the lobby "at the height of the crisis," even when the House was not in session.

In her 2010 book, "You Know I'm Right: More Prosperity, Less Government," she described herself as a fiscal conservative and social liberal who was "part of a new and growing crowd of 'sort-of' Republicans." She said Ronald Reagan was her favorite president, followed by Bill Clinton.

"I am too fiscally responsible to want to reach out and hug the Democrats. Their social spending will keep the next several generations laden with debt," she wrote. "At the same time, I am too fiercely independent to embrace the Republican Party, because I want people to be free to make their choices about their personal lives."

At best a right libertarian....

The traditionally conservative U.S. Chamber of Commerce is planning to endorse a primary challenger to progressive icon Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a move that represents a dramatic intervention in a Democratic race.

The influential organization typically supports Republican candidates who are closely aligned with the business community. But the Chamber has decided to help Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, a former CNBC anchor who is waging an underdog challenge to Ocasio-Cortez. The freshman New York City congresswoman is perhaps the most prominent liberal in the House.
