'We're not going to close the country' if there's a second wave, Trump says

With experts warning of a second wave of infections in parts of the South and Midwest as all 50 states ease pandemic restrictions, President Trump said the United States would not shut down again if the novel coronavirus comes roaring back. “We’re not going to close the country — we’re going to put out the fires,” Trump said Thursday as more than 25,000 new infections and at least 1,278 virus-related deaths were recorded across the United States.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has quietly updated its guidance to say that the virus “does not spread easily” from contaminated surfaces and is primarily transmitted through person-to-person contact. The change to the CDC website was made earlier this month without formal announcement or explanation, and some public health experts worry that it could give people the impression that they don’t have to wash their hands quite so often.

Here are some significant developments:

A study of 96,000 hospitalized coronavirus patients on six continents found that those who received hydroxychloroquine — the antimalarial drug taken and promoted by Trump — had a significantly higher risk of death compared with those who did not.

Trump ordered flags over federal buildings and monuments lowered to half-staff from Friday through Sunday “in memory of the Americans we have lost to the CoronaVirus.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) had asked the president to order flags lowered when the U.S. death toll — which surpassed 93,000 on Thursday — reaches 100,000.

trump hasn't learned anything and continues to make the same mistakes, using the same flawed logic.

If we get through this pandemic, it will be in spite of trump, not because of any actions he took.

it would be too politically harmful to do just to save lives. We had to realize, with the blind rush to reopen, that shutdowns were over, for good.

What the politicians can't do is force people to resume their pre-virus lives. Rational people will keep their personal "slowdowns" or shutdowns in effect. I will not be tricked by Capitol Hill or Wall Street to assume risks that I do not find to be acceptable. When a medical solution to the medical problem is proven, giving us a very high probability to either avoid the virus or recover from the illness, then I will consider the shutdown is over, not before.

I will continue to isolate myself from people who may be infected for the same reasons I never get in my car without putting on my seat belt. The seat belt does not eliminate the possibility of being killed in a wreck, but it certainly improves my chances.

For the most part, businesses were closing on their own or already setting up work-from-home arrangements before any state ordered anything.

It becomes white noise to the people , and they listen less. That's happening to trump right now. Just like he's trying to con people now to believe thousands of deaths is acceptable. Any normal person after failing so badly causing thousands to die needlessly would feel shame and remorse, but trump demands praise and congratulations , and attacks those who disagree. This is how sick he really is. He could care less by his actions now about us. HE wants wages lowered, and to force people to work with an active ongoing deadly pandemic killing people. He can't force people out other than his supporters , who'll soon have a change of heart about his decisions when they become infected at much higher rates from their spreading it around even more.

What he’s signaling here is his desire to starve people back to work and their possible death or disablement.

that isn't about himself. Of course closing wasn't Trump's choice and won't be again when the inevitable very bad second wave forces state and local lockdowns later this year. Mass deaths and overwhelmed hospitals and other systems guarantee that.

I am glad that I can stop treating cans, grocery bags and envelopes as if they'll kill me if I don't kill them first, so to speak. Keep washing those hands, and I'll probably often still leave bags and packages I don't need outside for a day or so until I do.

Even if all 35% of trump's base rush out to spend every dime they have, the economy can't run on 65% of the people staying home because they would rather not contract a potentially deadly disease for a cheeseburger or new blouse.

We’ve seen the deaths and the suffering and heard first hand reports from survivors. So once we see evidence that there is a resurgence of the virus, hospital admissions go up and deaths begin to mount, it won’t take us long to retreat back to our homes. Not all of us can stay home from our jobs or work from home, but a big enough portion can to bring on an economic pause that will do more than make Wall Street hiccough.

tRump can run his nasty mouth until he passes out, we are not listening any more. And even his experts are not getting much love these days. We know when we are up against something scary and deadly. So we’ll just make up our own minds what we need to do. Maybe we’ll be better prepared with toilet paper than we were in March. 😳
