The drug, hydroxychloroquine, has been around for decades but was thrust into the spotlight this spring when Trump began mentioning its name dozens of times during coronavirus briefings. While it had not been approved for this use, and still hasn't, he urged Americans to "try it."
Amid the growing public attention on the medication, its sales doubled from March 2019 to more than $50 million in March of this year, according to market research firm IQVIA, which tracks prescriptions dispensed by retail pharmacies including large chains and mail-order companies.
While the FDA recently cautioned against the use of the drug to treat coronavirus patients outside of hospitals, that warning came after more than 830,000 prescriptions for the drug were filled for the generic and name-brand version of the drug, Plaquenil, in March -- up from roughly 460,000 prescriptions written during the same time last year.

(12,265 posts)in fact she works in an eye doctor's office as an assistant. I unfriended them both last week after she took me on when I said it was unsafe and he was a moron. She said in her opinion it was completely safe and she would give it to her kids in a minute if they had symptoms (both of her kids have disabilities). I told her it was not, I told her my husband (who has a PhD in a hard science) said please don't do that. She then began to degrade my husband saying he "lived in an ivory tower and needed to get out in the world". Ok then. It is terrifying that these nutcases will give it to their kids who have horrible pre existing conditions.

(12,503 posts)for social distancing and the wearing of masks should emerge soon in a White House staged news conference, so be sure to tune in.
Because we will get to watch the evaporation of these doctors medical careers in real time on live TV. It should be an incredible career-suicide event to witness.

(1,671 posts)The Washington Post reports a study of 96,000 hospitalized Covid-19 patients on six continents found that those who received hydroxychloroquine were more likely to die than those who did not receive it. Nearly 15,000 of those patients were treated with hydroxychloroquine or the closely related drug chloroquine, or in combination with a type of antibiotics known as a macrolide such as azithromycin.
The study found:
A 34% increase in risk of death for those given hydroxychloroquine, and a 137% increase in risk of serious heart arrhythmias.
A 45% increase in risk of death for those given hydroxychloroquine and an antibiotic, and a 411% increase in risk of serious heart arrhythmias.
A 37% increase in risk of death for those given chloroquine, and a 256% increase in risk of serious heart arrhythmias.
A 37% increase in risk of death for those given chloroquine and an antibiotic, and a 301% increase in risk of serious heart arrhythmias.
The study, published Friday in the medical journal the Lancet, is based on a retrospective analysis of medical records, not a controlled study in which patients are divided into treatment groups. According to the Post, its the largest study yet for hydroxychloroquine treating coronavirus.
