I am not wearing a seat belt. Its a free country. I can do what I want.

Back to 1970: No way in the world are they going to make me wear a seat belt while I drive my chevy. Hell no. I don't care what the government says. It is a free country. And I have my rights. The government is infringing on my rights.

Eventually, it came down to money - you get a ticket driving without a seat belt and your insurance rates go up, and no coverage if in an accident without a seat belt on. It took years.

But behaviors were changed.

Well, perhaps money ($$$$) is part of the solution.
How about a 5% discount at the register if you are wearing a mask?
Or we wait until next year for a sane national policy.

She wasn't going to wear a seatbelt, oh, no, not her. No one was going to tell HER what to do.

Then she had a grandchild, and we told her that she could not drive with him in the car unless she was belted and he was safe in his car seat in the back. She was furious. She'd driven for years with her own babies lying on the front seat, and they survived!

Of course, she gave in, but she grumbled for years at that.

.

He would cite his experience at crash scenes and how those who did not wear them had a better chance of survival.

I stopped talking to him because he just started to become a racist asshole and is probably a MAGAt now.

My brother calls me and says there is a news article about him crashing his old Corvette and he needed a Medevac Helicopter to take him to a hospital trauma center 20 miles away. I bet he's still the same asshole because he never admits he's wrong.

I had a head on accident at 55mph with someone who came into my lane at about the same rate of speed. I walked away from it with no injuries.

They work. You acquaintance was a moron.

When I refuse the seatbelt, I put myself at risk. There is little risk of my decision killing the nurse or EMT (and their family members) that treats me when things go bad.

I frankly don't give a whit if people want to go to church, bars, or hairdressers. I only ask that part of their contract is to forcefully decline medical treatment for themselves and their families (or others that knowingly come into contact with them). Let them all french kiss each other just to "stick it to the libs".

They can suffer and die in their own homes. Others in their cult can bury them in the back yard.

The problem with these idiot culture warriors is that they NEVER take responsibility for their selfish decisions.

One's a law proposed by the public's representatives, discussed, voted on, and signed into law.

The other is based on laws written either for natural disasters or small outbreaks of an infectious diseases, where one person using knowledge s/he deems expert (but doesn't actually possess) decides what everybody will do and for how long they'll do it, and the reason or goal for doing it.

Some think they're being brave and stoic when they go without masks when they are really just endangering others.

electronics in her older car to annoy into doing so.

During a visit, she had to ride in my car and, sure enough, wouldn't listen to my admonition to put on her belt. Well, it didn't take long before the "ding, ding, ding" started, but she didn't make the connection. "Stop than damn noise" she screeched. "Fasten your damn belt" I answered. Finally I won a round.

Pretty common these days. Probably many of the same lawless Trumpian bozos who refuse to wear a mask or do anything else big gubment "orders" them to do.

Now I see some lawsuits against the lockdown. Maybe the bozos should be charged with treason or sedition--starting at the top--for hampering the country's/state's/city's efforts to win this war. If the bozos blocked a battalion of tanks from entering a battlefield to fight the commies, they would be arrested and charged.
