Every time I go out it's like only 1/3 at best of the people at stores are wearing masks. The rest simply don't care at all!

(13,357 posts)Friends in the Bay Area say it's pretty standard to be masked....But I live in the sierras and EVERYONE is uo here this weekend and they are NOT being safe at all!
My little mtn hospital only has 68 beds

(35,267 posts)The better we are at keeping it down the more likely people will stop believing it's a threat

(31,941 posts)Covid is a density driven disease. That is why it has spread so easily in the densest part of the country --- NYC and northern NJ. It was spread around because of the subway system where people are packed in and there is poor ventilation. CA does not have those problems and has a low death rate comparable with most of the western states.

(35,267 posts)Was not comparing us to other places
In our parts we started out strong and our number have been low
Now attitudes are changing and places are opening and filling up
I expect an increase in a few weeks

(3,479 posts)they recieve an enormous amount of international and domestic visitors every year, yet California only ranks 28/50 in terms of deaths per million residents. They state has done a terrific job containing the spread.

(31,941 posts)I guess you have never been to NYC. There is no place in CA even closely similar to density. In NYC everyone takes subways and buses to work. That is not the case in CA which is the land of the freeways with one person in a car. Many, many states have a lower death rate than CA and many higher. The ones higher have higher density population centers. CA has done nothing different than NY and many other states.

(15,696 posts)And we just had our 40th Covid19 death. But as stated above, some here are beginning to think it's getting better & they're venturing out more without masks. GG Park is packed today. I walked the dogs around the Music Concourse as usual this morning, and it was getting crowded by 8:00am.

(3,479 posts)in a 70 sq mile area. It's loaded with tourists visiting Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, etc.
LA County was the hardest hit region in California by far but even it's not doing as bad as I thought it would. The fact that CA isn't in the top 5 in deaths per capita is a minor miracle.

(3,479 posts)Outside of NYC, California metros are the most densely populated. That's a fact:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sfgate.com/bayarea/place/amp/California-cities-most-densely-populated-in-U-S-3436611.php
The urban cores of San Francisco and Los Angeles are as densely populated as anywhere outside NYC. San Francisco is very transit oriented and Los Angeles has the second busiest bus system in the nation. Yet neither city was hit as hard as the Northeast, Chicago, Michigan, or even Florida. The states that are doing better are mostly rural and none of them recieve even a fraction of the tourism California gets. You're just flat out wrong on this one.

(21,675 posts)young folks that are going without masks. At Costco, where you aren't let in without a mask, some people just take them off once they're in. I'm nonconfrontational, so will not call them out, but it pisses me off. I'm in Sac.

Then go back near and see if they frantically put it back on?
They should be tossing mask fakers with impunity?

(24,718 posts)won't do it again any time soon. Very few people masked. My daughter and I were. And stores / restaurants were not practicing cleaning regimens anymore.
I will no longer shop or patronize any establishment where masks aren't required.
Bad experience! Disappointing!

(22,340 posts)I'd guess it is at least 2/3 with masks
Some of the ones not wearing masks have them hanging around their neck to put on quickly. These are usually runners.

(10,887 posts)It was weird, once I got into Pasadena, I saw very few masks. Further east, people were gathering in groups with no masks at all.
On my way back, as soon as I crossed back into Highland Park, people had masks again.
Not a good sign. I think we're about to get another surge in cases. Ugh.

(54,302 posts)These people had no idea what July 4th was in celebration of, and could not identify ONE country on a map of the world, NOT EVEN THE UNITED STATES. They didn't even know that Africa was a continent, and not a country.
And you ask why they are so nonchalant about a virus? I think people THAT ignorant about the world would be nonchalant about any danger less imposing than Godzilla.

(21,056 posts)Yesterday I picked something up from Target that I ordered and line outside was long but everyone had a mask on.
Our local government and news have really emphasized the importance of wearing masks. Everyday at 11:30 they have someone on TV talking about the virus and Taking precautions.

(90,562 posts)Costco and Trader Joe's have been reliable. The PT place has been financially hit because they've only been talking post-surgical patients like me, and only seeing one or two people at a time, everybody wearing masks.
On Thursday I went for a long beach walk with my SIL and a friend to test my new knee (great success). I bundled up in sun protective gear as is my habit and tossed on a cloth mask. The friend gave me a hard time, but I simply said "Mr. Sun is not my friend. Mr. Pollen is not my friend either," and she finally subsided. They were in shorts and sleeveless shirts, improving their toasty tans.
Except for one couple who looked about my age, also covered up and in masks, everybody else we saw was in swimsuits and no masks. It was very pleasant to be out of the house and out in nature. Not too crowded. Eventually we saw cops doing patrol and telling the sunbathers to move on, but it was kind of spotty.
Eventually I'm going to try a few different stores for odds and ends I can't get at TJ's or Costco, and will see how the situation is elsewhere.
Best of luck to you.

(9,952 posts)Michigan puts us to shame. I listen to the percentage... like ALL wearing it mask there. I just went out to convenience store and five other people, I was the only one wearing. It does surprise me we are so bad at it. But, our numbers are really controlled, they jumped on it immediately, and we haven't been hit like Calif, Michigan or NY

(11,726 posts)I live on the Central Coast and things are pretty tight here. I would say 95% or higher are wearing masks. I even see people driving with their masks on.

(2,193 posts)And not just out to the beach but on their decks and lawns, the same weekend that he said it.
He's not helping. I strongly dislike the locals who think it's a conspiracy, who use the term "tyranny" and think it's a God given right to be on the beach without social distancing or masks.
For myself, I'm following the guidelines.
