(CNN) Joe Biden is thinking big.
Confronted with the prospect of taking office next year in the depths of a historic economic and health crisis, Biden is now talking about a bolder presidency, with ambitions stretching beyond the restoration of pre-Donald Trump normalcy.
And there is a growing sense in Democratic circles, particularly among the progressive wing of the party, that there is one sure way to show he means it: Make Elizabeth Warren his running mate.
The Massachusetts senator has mostly been regarded as a vice presidential dark horse more likely destined, if progressive dreams were answered, for a top cabinet position. But that calculation could be shifting as the factors influencing Biden's decision evolve in the face of a mushrooming catastrophe. Over the past month, the pair have forged a deeper personal connection, following the death of Warren's brother, and begun to sharpen their focus on common political ground as Biden publicly shifted on an issue that famously divided them nearly two decades ago.
The Biden campaign has been tight-lipped about its process, and keeps a shorter shortlist than one might ascertain from public pronouncements and appearances, which seem to oscillate among the contenders. Asked why she sensed an increased opening for Warren, Sara Nelson, the international president of the Association of Flight Attendants, pointed to a specific moment Biden and his team chose to highlight.
"I'm seeing actions that show it," said Nelson, an increasingly influential labor leader. "The grilling that Elizabeth Warren gave Steve Mnuchin (on Tuesday) around enforcement of the CARES Act ... was right in line with what we were talking about. Biden picked that up and amplified it with a tweet thread."
Richard Cordray, the first director of the Warren-built Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, who has worked closely with her and Biden, told CNN he believed a new economic crisis -- and prospect that it could linger for years without significant interventions -- raised Warren's stock.
He also suggested that, for all the policy differences they sparred over during the primary, Biden and Warren had more in common than many realized.
"Both of them have a tremendous personal strain to their policy. They really do see policy in terms of, for Biden, in terms of his middle class upbringing, and the same really for Elizabeth," Cordray said. "And it's something that neither of them has ever lost through many years in the public arena. A lot of people do kind of move on from their roots, but neither of them ever has."
A recent CBS News Poll suggests that Warren would be a popular choice with a large swath of Democratic voters. More than 7-in-10 respondents said she should be considered for the slot. Sen. Kamala Harris was her closest competition, with 59%. Fifty percent named former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and 49% listed Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
Pitted against each other, Warren came out on top again, with 36% naming her as their first choice. Harris placed second at 19%. Abrams and Klobuchar again finished third and fourth, respectively.
A CNN national poll earlier this month found Warren was viewed favorably by 69% of Democratic voters and unfavorably by 19%.

Also, lets not forget this news story from 2016...
Biden wanted Warren as his VP
Joe Biden took months to decide he wouldnt run for president but he was sold on Elizabeth Warren as his running mate from the start, people familiar with the situation told POLITICO.
And he still thinks the Massachusetts firebrand would be Hillary Clintons best choice to replace him as the nations No. 2 in January 2017.
Warren, a freshman senator from Massachusetts, who supports breaking up the big banks and re-imposing 1930s-era Wall Street regulations to prevent another global financial crisis, was Bidens only real choice, according to an official he spoke to at the time.
Biden who told an interviewer on Tuesday that he considered running for president because he believed he was the best person for the job took his hat out of the ring in late October 2015, citing the stresses on his family following the death of his son Beau.
But hes recently told associates that Warren would be an equally smart pick for Hillary Clinton, who has been sharply criticized for refusing to publish the transcripts of her high-paid speeches to the elite banking firm of Goldman Sachs.
Biden, a senior Democratic official said, first mentioned Warren as a possible running mate during his earliest strategy sessions with a team of advisers that included friends Mike Donilon, Steve Richetti and Ted Kaufman; Donilon, the person said, was particularly enthusiastic about it.

(15,325 posts)..but I believe Biden already knows who will be his closest ally in the Oval Office, & it is no one from the Primary. ( other than Kamala Harris, I see no one else)
This is a game of strategy.
I would hope he doesn't reveal his VP until he secures the official nom, & thus giving the Magats any advantage of time to begin destroying that person's character & credibility. And you know their waiting like vultures after a fresh kill to do just that.
Take all the time possible Mr Biden.

(15,325 posts)Obama's main reason for choosing Biden was to shore up his own lack of Foreign Policy creds.
Thus Biden filled that role as well as being in DC politics for many years & knew the names & the business well.
Biden will choose his VP the same way.
The duo will present a total package with the ability to step in the role of President at any time. They will also be compatible on Biden's own preferred policies & personality.
I trust him in whomever he chooses.
It must be as perfect a fit possible for his admin to succeed, especially considering what he will inherit.

(15,548 posts)All pearl clutching and hand wringing aside, Warren is the #1 choice among all Dem voters (and tied for first place with Harris among Black voters)

(14,286 posts)Smart, progressive policies and a take-no-prisoners approach. Of course she would destroy Pence in a debate.
And what can Trump say, other than Pocahontas! again?
Saw a poll a few weeks ago that Warren was the top choice among African-Americans. I found that a little surprising, having assumed they would prefer an AA VP. But her policies really favor the working class, especially those struggling with bills, and she has plans to fix the situation. I think Warren could unite the party, being somewhat aligned with Bernie and DSA plans, while steadfastly defending capitalism but regulated capitalism, a fair field for everybody.

(9,218 posts)I love Warren but fear losing them as Dem voters.
They've supported Dems for years and according to the sentiment on AMJoy this morning, feel it's time for Dems to step up a bit more for them in this regard.
Val Demings, Kamela Harris would do it. I love Warren and Klobuchar too. I like Val Demings, would love to see Harris as AG.

(13,056 posts)And this thing about primary baggage is a red herring. By next November the primary campaign will be ancient history.

(812 posts)If not VP, then we need her as AG.
Susan Rice or Tammy Duckworth second choice.
Klobuchar doesn't do it for me at all!
