Pharma giant Roche gets US go-ahead for Covid-19 antibody test
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/03/pharma-giant-roche-gets-us-go-ahead-for-covid-19-antibody-test
Swiss drug maker Roche Holding AG says it has received emergency use approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for an antibody test to help determine if people have ever been infected with the coronavirus.
Governments, businesses and individuals are seeking such blood tests to help them learn more about who may have had the disease, who may have some immunity and to potentially craft strategies to end lockdowns that have battered global economies.
Roche had previously pledged to make its antibody test available by early May and to boost production by June to high double-digit millions per month. The Basel-based company, which also makes separate molecular tests to identify people with active Covid-19 infections, said its antibody test, Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2, has a specificity rate of about 99.8% and sensitivity rate of 100%.
These rates help determine if a patient has been exposed to Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, and if the patient has developed antibodies against it.

100% accurate antibody test could be coronavirus breakthrough
https://www.itv.com/news/2020-05-14/100-accurate-antibody-test-could-be-coronavirus-breakthrough/
A new test to determine whether people have ever been infected with coronavirus is 100% accurate, public health leaders have said. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has previously called antibody testing a game-changer as it may reveal how many people have had Covid-19 without any symptoms and so may be immune.
Any reliable test may help speed up measures to ease the lockdown because people could go back to work confident they were not likely to get it again. Public Health England (PHE) said last week scientific experts at its Porton Down facility had carried out an independent evaluation of a new antibody blood test developed by a Swiss pharmaceutical company.
The examination found Roches serology test was highly specific and had an accuracy of 100%.
Number 10 said the new antibody test would "certainly" be available on the NHS but added that commercial discussions with Roche are ongoing.

Roches COVID-19 antibody test receives FDA Emergency Use Authorization and is available in markets accepting the CE mark
https://www.roche.com/media/releases/med-cor-2020-05-03.htm
The serology test has a specificity greater than 99.8% and sensitivity of 100% (14 Days post-PCR confirmation)
The high specificity of the test is crucial to determine reliably if a person has been exposed to the virus and if the patient has developed antibodies
Roche will provide high double-digit millions of tests already in May for countries accepting the CE mark and in the U.S. under Emergency Use Authorization, further ramping up capacities thereafter
The test is available on Roches cobas e analysers which are widely available around the world

(58,785 posts)In any case, Roche got emergency FDA approval four weeks ago, so it's likely someone as prominent as Senator Kaine and his wife did get that one.
When I was tested earlier this month I was told by a nurse (when I asked) that false negatives were maybe 30%. (!) The hospitalist said they weren't that high, but he focused on my clinical picture when explaining why he believed I didn't have COVID.
All in all, hopefully the availability, when widely available, of truly reliable -- and very fast -- testing will turn this thing around big time.
