Tennessee police chief tells officers who 'don't have an issue' with George Floyd arrest to turn in badges
By Aris Folley - 05/28/20 05:26 PM EDT
A police chief in Tennessee said on Wednesday that officers who dont have an issue with the arrest of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died earlier this week after a Minneapolis police officer pinned him to the ground by kneeling on his neck, should turn over their badges.
If you wear a badge and you dont have an issue with this...turn it in, he continued.
The tweet by Roddy has racked up more than 489,000 likes and over 117,000 retweets in less than a day as news and reactions surrounding the death of Floyd have continued to dominate social media over the past few days.

A chief standing up like this seems important.

(297,154 posts)I used to forget, but a vid he did on inclusivity that wound up with the point that Nashville should certainly be inclusive because no one's more inclusive than Dolly Parton. Now that association helps me remember.

I don't know much about the current mayor, but the past mayors I am familiar with would be right there with Chattanooga.

(32,626 posts)has the balls to stand up and speak out. Wonderful to see there is one, and I'm sure there are more, but this stuff is institutional now. It's nation-wide, and it's purposeful.

Until these murderers in blue are tried EVERY TIME in a REAL court of law - not a kangaroo parody, words mean little.

(4,522 posts)where is the condemnation of the training and the culture that comes FROM THE TOP?
The cop had a list a mile long of stuff he was not disciplined (I would suggest prosecuted for). Why? Not like they didn't know he was a problem. So was it NOT a problem? What about the others? Were they bad apples? Racist? or were they TRAINED to not see anything wrong with misuse of force etc? TRAINED to not actually help a citizen but to "put him down" instead.
Until there is nation wide evaluation of how our cops have become trained to devalue humane life - we're still going to see more of this. It's not just a few bad apples. It's the barrel that is causing the rot.
We need to hear politicians, people, etc not just focusing on the individual - but the system that allows this to happen again and again.
disclaimer- I'm sure there are some great officers - but that's why I see this as a SYSTEMIC issue.

(13,582 posts)Im sure there are plenty of racist cops that are cheering for this murderer. We have a long way to go to weed the racists out of pig force. This isnt even a beginning.
