(31,893 posts)I don't understand the motivation - but as someone said above, it gets them on the news.

(22,306 posts)"Protestors" or "rioters" are not a homogeneous group. If someone smashes the glass at CNN with a hammer, there is a lot to be learned about who is doing it and why they might be doing so -- but if they're doing it, one thing is clear: They don't value either the building or the institution. Same for when someone starts a fire in a residential neighborhood, or in a precinct building. Unrest makes it possible for people with all sorts of motives to act. But no matter who is acting, it's very, very rare for people to personally trash something they love or value. There's a disconnect between the instigator and the object, or the instigator has to create one, before they destroy it.

(6,930 posts)And they sure as hell do not give a good goddamn about what others might value.

(12,165 posts)all across Atlanta last night. And a lot of skinny shirtless white men. It was bizarre.
It was hard to watch my city being smashed by people who were not part of the massive peaceful protest march.
There is no excuse for the looting. It became a theater of the absurd when rioters left downtown to go uptown to Buckhead to loot shopping malls and destroy mom and pop places along the way.
The police in Atlanta were remarkably restrained. I watched the protest footage from when it began to about 2 am, and I was surprised that more people who clearly were there just to destroy property were not arrested.
There were many people righteously angry. And then there were the provocateurs who took advantage of the situation to destroy and steal.
