North Carolina governor: Trump insisted on full convention with no face masks or social distancing

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump called Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper on Friday and insisted on a full Republican convention this summer with no face masks or social distancing, according to a spokesperson for the governor.

"The Governor spoke to the President today. When the President insisted on a full convention arena with no face coverings and no social distancing the Governor expressed concerns and suggested a scaled back event with fewer attendees," said Sadie Weiner, a spokeswoman for the governor, in a statement. "They agreed to continue talking about ways to have a safe convention in Charlotte."

The call comes days after Trump threatened to pull the convention from Charlotte and railed against Cooper. Trump said the governor is "unable to guarantee" that the arena can be filled to capacity, and said Tuesday that Cooper has about "a week" to decide whether the convention could take place in Charlotte.

CNN reached out to the Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign for comment. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Maybe he should take it to Vegas. Wasn't that where someone in government wanted to offer up her citizens to be guinea pigs for Covid spread? Let her have his diseased nonsense. Let him take all his riffraff there instead.

Fuck him. I, and many other North Carolinians, don't want any more of those riffraff deplorables in NC than we already have. We are all filled up. We don't need any more of the deplorables. We have too many as it is now.

Call Trump's bluff and send him packing to go find some place that wants that crap.

People where I live are not taking it seriously at all. They are wearing masks only on their mouths or around their neck or not at all. I wonder why the ones who wear the masks only on their mouths or around their necks even bother at all. At least less adults are snickering and pointing at me the few times I go out nowadays. I've kept it to going out only once or twice per month so far. So far so good, but it's only a matter of time with Cooper reopening the state.

In fact Trump once called her his favorite mayor.
We have a decent sized convention center and I really don't think it is the right size for a national convention.

Not to mention Sundance Square will have to be sterilized and the hotels will have to be fumigated.

in that new state the wingnuts want to make out of eastern WA and OR and part of ID and WY, variously proposed as the State of Lincoln or the State of Jefferson or Absaroka, all to be considered as the 51st state.

There are some huge barns and rodeo arenas up there that would suffice for venues.

I can't think of many other places that will allow that many scofflaw Republicans to spread disease.

Maybe Nebraska will have them. Maybe Wyoming. Maybe Mississippi or Louisiana.

as his vassals. Lots of loud cheering for him on TV, throughout the convention.

He's especially set on this because Democrats might go with a virtual, online convention instead.

Trump's planning to try to spin that as brave, united Republicans -- all loudly adoring their orange idol -- versus timid, frightened Dems.

pack the venue to the gills with no masks and no social distancing. There are plenty of old-geezer republicans, including Trump who are just ripe for catching and dying from Covid-19 and it might be a good opportunity to start culling that herd.

Let them have their party. We just have to be extra vigilant about protecting ourselves from them, but then again, it's not that hard for most of us to avoid right-wingers like the plague as it is.

Tarrant went hard for Beto.

Of course they could take their party over to Lubbock and just use the football stadium and they can enjoy Panhandle heat.

Or Odessa - Midland which is very Republican.

San Antonio flatly told us they did not want to hold our State Convention so it is going to be virtual. I doubt San Antonio will be interested

with no masks and no social distancing and let them infect each other.

Unfortunately, too many North Carolinians will have to serve them at hotels and restaurants and the arena itself. The disease spreaders will fly to town and use transportation around Charlotte. They will insist that they don't need no stinking masks, because freedom.

NC currently has a 40% uptick in corona virus cases right now---with the influx of up to 50k disease spreaders it could cause havoc in Charlotte.

Just say no Governor Cooper!

Of money they would make from the convention to the cost of treating another spike of corona virus, not to mention the possible death of who knows how many - because you know that the die-hards (no pun intended) will flock to see their lord and master, even if they are sick. They will celebrate their mutual insanity, up close and personal. And this would be just about the time that the second wave of the virus has been predicted.

It would be a disaster and no way is it worth whatever profits they might make.

Plus - well, the obvious. Why on earth would they want to host thousands of hate and rage filled fools in their city?
